COVINGTON -- Duncan Dohmen wants people to notice the pistol he carries.
He isn't a police officer and tells people that when he's asked. He likes these chances to educate people about a right afforded them 219 years ago -- a right he fears could be stripped.
"Rights not exercised are rights lost," said the 68-year-old resident of Covington in King County. "... I was walking around for 18 years with a pistol secretly concealed and it alarmed nobody. Then I realized that (openly) carrying a pistol might cause questions."
So for the past two years Dohmen has openly worn his Smith & Wesson 1911 model .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol. He's an active member of the Open Carry movement and takes any chance he gets to talk about the right to bear arms under both the U.S. and Washington constitutions.

Nice little poll there to FReep.....
Honestly, if a person walks into a store I’m in with a holstered pistol, I feel safer.
Open carry should not bother anyone, in my opinion. It’s the ugly dudes lurking in the shadows that should be of concern.
“Open carry is as much about educating the public and restoring the Constitution as it is about self defense.”

Indeed.
Wasn’t that the idea when that guy showed up at a Tea Party gathering with an “assault weapon”?
The ignorant pussies in the elite media wet themselves completely through, at the open display of a Constitutional right.
I was with my lib-in-law in a store out in the middle of Ks when she nervously pointed out a man with a revolver strapped on.
I said, well, at least we don’t have to worry about the store being robbed while we’re here.
(Honestly, if the guy with the revolver were intent on something nefarious, he would have hidden the gun until the opportune moment.)
I like both open and concealed carry. It keeps the scumbags guessin.
He needs to start with himself, but I applaud his efforts.
The Open carrier was at fault for not buying a $20 tape recorder. Hell an Ipod can do that for you these days!
“...unlawful carrying or displaying of a firearm “in a manner, under circumstances, and at a time and place that either manifests an intent to intimidate another or that warrants alarm for the safety of other persons.””
What a vague, BS law. Totally subjective as it is based on feelings, not facts.
The only reason this guy is being charged is because he was hauled out of his car at gunpoint and cuffed.
Nice to know that not everyone in King County is an anti-gun weenie.
Sounds to me like that manager in the McD’s in Prosser certain IS.
My sister resides in Benton County. Both she and he hubby have guns, although I don’t know if either of them have a CCW. I’ll have to email her and ask.
The open carrier in this case carried a 1911 pistol.
Yeah, plus many of them are really nice to talk to. Especially when you ask what they're carrying.
BS! So everyone who OC’s needs to carry a tape recorder too?
Why not just have them carry a medical kit in case someone is hurt?
Yeah, why I brought it up. This is the first time I have seen an OC being an issue with a 1911 and honestly believe it is in the minority.
He needs to start with himself, but I applaud his efforts.”
As this was not a quote, I suspect that it is the reporter, not the open carrier, who needs the education.
Exactly. The presence of a holstered weapon makes everyone in the room more polite and respectful.
And when you said that what did your Lib-In-Law say?
