If an anti-incumbent tide sweeps Sen. Bob Bennett out of Congress later this year, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a fellow Utah Republican, doesn't sound like he'll be too upset.
"The people are restless, they want to see change, and Sen. Bennett, with all due respect, he is going to have to go out and defend his record and explain some things to voters," Chaffetz told CNN Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
Bennett is seeking a fourth term, but is battling a tough anti-incumbent mood and multiple Republican challengers who are upset with his votes for the banking and auto bailouts.
Chaffetz, an up-and-coming voice in the GOP, was first elected to Congress in 2008 despite opposition from Bennett and Sen. Orrin Hatch, both of whom backed incumbent Rep. Chris Cannon in that year's Republican primary. Chaffetz has publicly split with Bennett on a number of issues and even considered challenging the incumbent senator before ruling it out last year.
"More than ever policy and principles are paramount," Chaffetz said, offering praise for the Tea Party movement and its growing influence. "You have to go out and articulate your position and justify how you voted. If you dont do that you could very well be on your way home with a one-way ticket."

Bennett is part of the problem. His opposition deserves conservative support.
I can only hope McCain is also in trouble in Arizona.
Cannon being defeated finally was one the highlights of the last election for me.
Question:
Might not the Utah delegation be a test-tube case of what Potomac Fever can do to a conservative skull?
I'm guessing that Hatch, Bennett, Cannon, et al were at least reasonably conservative when they were initially elected.
But here we are twenty-or-so years later...and they don't seem to be so conservative anymore.
GOP, all my life talking right, acting left.
Excuses, excuses, next year, stick with us, the children....bla,bla,bla.
See ya! Take a hike, thanks a lot, enjoy your retirement, if you see anything drop me a e-mail....

Get
Out.
Is Chaffetz a MORMON??
They keep saying “anti-incumbent”. I don’t see it. It’s anti-Democrat. To the extent that any Republican gets caught up in it (McCain) it is because they don’t oppose the Democrats. Hayworth ain’t no Washington outsider and Bennett will not get primaried by a neophyte.
The way the balloting at the convention works, the last-place candidate will be eliminated, and his or her delagates will vote for someone else. Their defeated candidate can make an endorsement.
Yes, Chaffetz is a Brigham Young University grad. ONLY Mormons can get elected in Utah (unofficial state law).
Yes, Chaffetz is a byU grad, or a “Zoob” as us Utes call the cretins from Provo.
Any hope of beating Jim Matheson this year you think?
No, because his district has all of the liberal strongholds of the state—SLC proper, Park City, Moab, etc. Most voters in that district simply vote for anyone with a “D” next to their name on the ballot.
Well they didn't vote for Obama (58% McCain) and didn't vote for rat candidates for statewide office all of whom got creamed.
Not only that, but the Democrat west side of SLC is in Chaffetz’s CD.
If they gain a seat would split keep Salt Lake City split, or even split it 4 ways?
I would split SLC 3 ways and combine each portion with suburban areas, and draw a rural fourth CD. I refuse to countenance a Democrat CD in Utah.
