The hit squad behind the assassination of a Hamas commander in a Dubai hotel tried to make his death look like an accident by electrocuting him with a bedside lamp.
Police sources said the killers, who used fake British passports, tried to induce the effects of a heart attack before smothering Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh with a pillow in his room.
It is understood that the lamp was taken apart and the wiring attached to a device that pulsed electricity into his body.
An electric shock can make the heart muscles go into spasm, just as they would if a victim suffered from a heart attack brought on by high blood pressure.
Police said they found pills used to treat high blood pressure in Al-Mabhouhs room.
The revelations come as the row between Israel and Britain reached a new pitch amid claims that the fake British passports used by the killers had been secretly copied by Tel Aviv airport immigration officials.
The Israeli ambassador to London has been accused of stonewalling all attempts to find out how the killers had the passports.
But the Foreign Office has been told that all six of the genuine passport holders - all residents in Israel - had their documents briefly taken away at the airport during routine checks.

Foriegn intrigue ping.
This aggression will not stand, man.
Break out the world’s tiniest violin . . .
That right there tells me it was not Mossad?
the accident thing didn’t work too well.
Once its about the spies, you can’t tell what happened just as easily could have been, some other towelheads that rubbed this dirtbag out. Who could ever know?
*ping*
This hit sounds like typical muzzie-led ineptness. It wasn’t Israel.
This sounds more like Islamofascist trying out a hit with the plot line of some NCIS episode. H Abbey could figure this one out before the first Commercial.
You have officials telling you that the assassins tried to make it look like an accidental electrocution by a bedside lamp. And then they tell you that the killers disassembled the lamp to get at its wires, and evidently used a device or devices against the decedents chest to which they attached those wires.
Now, mister spokesman, sir, could you pleeze 'splain to mee how this could have been expected by anybody, like maybe the killers, to look like an accidental electrocution?
Somethings just not right. If this was a real Mossad operation it was as if they wanted everyone to know it was Mossad. If this is Mossad it would only happen under the orders of Netenyau.
This whole damn thing is strange.
I am puzzled.
He’s still dead, right? I don’t care how he went. More Hamas scumbags need to go, by any mens possible.
I was thinking the same thing, too.
I mean, the KGB used a tiny metal pellet with ricin, on an umbrella, to nick one of their targets and murder him.
Mossad can certainly do better than them!
I believe that it was. Everyone knows what they did. That was intentional, but unprovable. And every bad guy knows that if he were there, he would have been toast too. With regard to their enemies, they made their point: no one is safe. Good for them!
The point! They wanted everyone to know that enemies of Israel are at risk. This is a good thing.
