Sea Shepherd Receives an additional €1 Million Euros from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery

Extra funds to support ongoing project to protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve

On February 4th, 2010, at the Goed Geld Gala in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery not only donated the annual amount of half a million Euros, they also handed over an additional check worth €1 million to Geert Vons, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s General Director of the Netherlands and Alex Cornelissen, Director of Operations, Galapagos. The extra funds will support Sea Shepherd’s ongoing efforts to protect the Galapagos, a UN World Heritage Site.

Despite clear rules and legislation, commercial fisheries are still exploiting the legally protected Galapagos Marine Reserve. In particular, the illegal finning of sharks, the catching of tuna, marlin and other illegal poaching activities form a serious threat for the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

With this project funding, Sea Shepherd will both logistically and financially support the local authorities to protect this delicate and unique ecosystem. A primary goal of this project is to set up an “Automatic Identification System” for vessels. This will enable all the authorities and organizations involved to monitor illegally operating fishing vessels and to act instantly to enforce exiting regulations.

The Dutch National Postcode Lottery has made this concrete project to stop illegal poaching possible, thus enabling Sea Shepherd to better protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Sea Shepherd is extremely grateful for the support it has received.

Since 1989, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery has donated almost €3 billion to support good causes. This year, 75 social and environmental organizations will receive €513 million from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.

Ah that's a west coast flavor, I believe.

Seeing whales can change the way one views life. I am with at bay on this one, perhaps, in that I see no reason for them to be killed, and I cheer for those who try to stop it.

I'm not clear on what they do with them. Are they eaten? If so, it's no different than killing a cow or deer or a chicken for that matter.

No, I'm not convinced that they are doing it for research purposes, they are doing it for profit and there's nothing wrong with profit as far as most conservatives think but there's an end use for those whales, I suppose other cultures find them palatable.

Alot of people see dolphins and go “awwwwww”.
They never get to see those cute critters viciously shred other animals for simple sport.

As for Sea Shepherd, they are little more than petty thugs with ships.
Think of ELF or Earth First on the open ocean, and about as smart.

Why don’t you go somewhere where moronicity and eco-terror are welcomed?
I hear tell the DemUns are looking for new posters.
They’ll appreciate your smug eco-terror pandering more than it is here.

I've seen plenty of whales, not much of an epiphany there. Large ocean going cows. Uh, same reason people kill cows. They eat them. Or do you not eat any meat or wear leather?

I can lose weight, have in the past. You sir, will be a crotchety old f-—t from here on out. Now put the mouse down at the computer room in the old folks home and let someone else have a turn.

Then the Japanese ought to sue the Dutch government for aiding and abetting sea terrorists. Any future damage done to their boats by these idiots should result in an interntional lawsuit.

We have laws governing the humane killing of cows. The whales are not privy to the same, and often suffer a great deal and take a long time to die.

If cows were slaughtered in this country the way whales are by Japan and Norway, the USDA would shut them down.

So be careful with your comparisons.

Too bad the Japanese are lying, bribing, eco-terrorists in their own right, and therefore have no room to talk about anyone else on this issue.

Cows, deer, and chickens are local and landlocked. Whales are unowned and subject to the greed and bloodthirsty behavior of all who can access the ocean.

It's too bad you are unclear about whales.

here is what one should do with whales, fyi

You don't want to go there with me. I work in healthcare and I am willing to bet you never see what I do in an average week, like 2yo kids dying of cancer, etc.

So take that argument elsewhere.

I agree with you that Sea Shepherd is a goofy group. In fact I read a book the leader wrote once and was pretty put-off by it.
Nonetheless I will support them in stopping the killing of whales, particularly in the ways it is done.

I'm perfectly clear about whales and I'm perfectly clear about the loony left liberal, PETA types

If whales are a food source, they are no different than any other wild game, "landlocked" or not, whether you think they are cute, noble, majestic or not.

Fish live in the same ocean as whales do. Do you think the same of them?

So if the whales died an instant painless death you would be okay with it? Since you implied that just seeing whales somehow was a trans formative event, I doubt it.

The Japanese are harvesting a limited number of Minke Whales (NOT ENDANGERED) as research. Legal under the IWC rules. The rules ALSO state, NONE of the whales can be wasted, hence the Japanese have the right to package the remaining whale meat for food. Period. If the Sea Moe Larry and Curlys don't like it they should work to get the LAW changed. Until then they are pirates and should be treated as such.

That has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
YOU don’t want to go there.
Sea Shepherd also doesn’t want to study sea life for possible medications that could be used to treat cancer.

I like how Mar presumes to know what I have seen of cancer in post 52.
As if Mar knows anything about who in my family has had it.

No. I love wildlife and detest those who kill it for no reason. Very few of those killing whales actually eat them.
And certainly they are not hungry or in need of food.
