Obama to write Health Care Bill & use reconciliation - What about the Byrd Rule?

According to the Associated Press, President Obama intends to write his own version of the Health Care Legislation, and attach it to the budget, using a procedure called reconciliation to eliminate the need for any Republican votes.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Byrd Rule, named for Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia could quickly derail the President's attempt to pass Health Care Legislation through budget reconciliation. The Byrd Rule, adopted in 1985, states that any provision or amendment of a budget reconciliation bill that any Senator decides is "extraneous" would automatically be stripped from the bill if there are not 60 votes saying that it should stay.

They must think there is a way around the Byrd rule, or they wouldn't be trying to pass it via reconciliation.

I certainly hope the Republicans have sense enough to invoke the Byrd rule.

The GOP could tie it up for a few weeks with Points Of Order and procedural votes but almost all of it can be reconciled. The problem Obama will have is the sunset rule meaning without re-authorization in 5 years all the so-called benefits and taxes die. After the GOP takes over they do nothing with it and then all the Rats can yell is, “Republicans killed it”.

I think this is all about pressuring RINO’s into coming to the table to make a pork deal in exchange for a vote.

They only need one republican vote and if they can get Snowe to believe they’ve got the ability to pass this without 60 votes she might just blink and take some pork in exchange for her vote.

McConnell thus far has done a masterful job of holding all 40 (now 41) GOP senators together.

The critical objective now is for no GOP member in the House or Senate to give the RATS a lifeline and political cover. They continue to dig this health care political grave for themselves; let them have full accountability for it.

And, we must kill this reconciliation ploy and call it the “nuclear option” for public consumption.

With all the negative attention about Landrieu’s and Nelson’s pork deals even Maine’s RINO twins wouldn’t touch a pork bribe. If the GOP can’t stop this, they need to expose the summit as Kabuki and they also need to force Reid into publicly using every underhanded trick in his arsenal to pass the bill. Make it all public and dirty.
