Utah: Freedom Works endorses Bennett's primary opponent
The Chicago Examiner ^ | February 18, 2010 | Joshua Brett

No one is expecting the Democrats to steal Sen. Robert Bennett's seat in Utah, one of the reddest states in the country. But that doesn't mean that the three-term incumbent will get off scot-free this year.

Bennett is being challenged from his right by Mike Lee, a former gubernatorial counsel in the state, in the GOP Primary. And Lee got a boost today when he was endorsed by the conservative group Freedom Works, led by former Congressman Dick Armey (R-TX).

"What is really exciting is the emergence of a new personality on the scene one who understands the Constitution of the United States," Armey said at a press conference announcing the endorsement. "One of the first things I noticed about Mike was he does have a great record of constitutional scholarship."

Bennett is known as Bailout Bob because he supported bailing out Wall Street. He also supports amnesty for illegal aliens. We need to get rid of him.

Mike Lee is a really good consensus candidate, with backing from grassroots conservatives and the establishment.

I think he has what it takes to win over delegates and at a minimum take Bob Bennett to a primary.

It’s really great to see so many squishy Republicans getting challenged in the primaries by true conservatives. One of the hardest things to do is explain to the average guy why the Republicans are any different than the Democrats when they point to all the years that we controlled the Senate and House and yet very little changed. The truth is that although the GOP had a majority at times, conservatives have never had a majority and until that happens fundamental change will never happen. Godspeed to anybody who can take out Bennett.

“Newt on the wrong side... again”

Those that fail to remember history are doomed to repeat it, or something like that.

With Newt being a history professor this idea is either false or Newt is suffering from a psychiatric disorder. I would bet on his needing a shrink.

Nice to see Armey get this one right. It makes it more confusing that he would back McCain.

There’s a lot of interest in replacing him with a more conservative Senator. He’s not terrible or anything but it’s for him to retire.

Utah has a weird system. There will be a state convention if Bennett doesn’t get enough support there he and one other person will run against each other in a primary.

Hah. So there’s enough energy to fine-tune conservatism. That’s something.

Armey for an Economist is sometimes a little confusing to me.

I don’t think UT would ever retire either Bennett or Hatch. Both are practically useless.
