The Real Reason for Obama's Unpopularity
Townhal.com ^ | February 18, 2010 | Steve Chapman

Posted on 02/18/2010 4:50:45 AM PST by Kaslin

When a president suffers a sharp decline in popularity early in his term, it seems safe to conclude he has badly misjudged the mood of the electorate, pushed the wrong policies and set himself on the path to becoming a one-term president.

That, it's widely agreed, is the sad tale of Barack Obama, who has managed to demoralize liberals while inspiring a wave of gloating among conservatives. A new CNN/Opinion Research poll finds that already, most Americans want to vote him out in 2012.

But both Democrats and Republicans are jumping the gun. They forget that this storyline also describes Ronald Reagan, who saw his approval rating sink over his first 12 months -- yet rebounded to carry 49 states in his 1984 re-election bid. Bill Clinton was significantly less popular than Obama for most of his initial year, and we all know how that turned out.

George W. Bush likewise managed to hack off a lot of onetime supporters soon after taking office, and when his popularity soared eight months into his term, it was not because of anything he did but because of the 9/11 attacks. He, too, won re-election.

American politicians and commentators are generally not afflicted by a deep knowledge or appreciation of history. If they were, they would not waste their time laboring to explain something that requires little explanation. They could simply state the obvious -- new presidents invariably lose public esteem in the first year of their terms -- and go on to try to explicate something truly mysterious, like Lady Gaga.

Gloating? That is what is wrong with liberals. It is all a game to them about who wins regardless of the outcome for all. What a selfish narcissistic world they inhabit.

The difference is that Obama is a sociopathic personality who has an agenda that has never been publicly stated (the imposition of Islam, with all its backwardness and quasi-socialist economic stagnation) and people are just becoming aware of this now.

He’s losing the liberals because they have realized (idiots that they were) that to Bambi, it’s all about him and his power, and that his agenda is not necessarily the same as theirs or even what he claimed it to be during the campaign. As for conservatives, he never had us anyway.

I believe Steve Chapman is more confused than the people he assumes are gloating.

I do not see gloating, I see people who are really upset at the commie takeover going on. They want it to stop.

They are also very aware they have to be willing to fight back the advancement of the Obozo agenda.

Some may gloat, like the guy who said he doesn’t care about bipartisanship because “I won”. That is gloat.

There is no real evidence to suggest that the public finds Obama far more fallible or detestable than they usually find presidents at this stage.

He is way off the mark here, as he is with the rest of his perception that the real problem is that the public can't think coherently.

Bravado to demoralize a dangerous enemy who has slipped up badly is also not gloating. It is the oldest form of PsyOps in unrecorded history.

The writer attempts to compare ozero’s unpopularity to Reagan’s in his first year. What planet is he on? Reagan came under assult by the dim media before he was elected, then they ramped it up from there. For the 8 years he was in office, Reagan’s biggest political enemy was the media.
(For those who didn’t see this, picture the opposition to GWBush and then some).
The current dim media openly campaigned for ozero and is part of his ministry of propaganda. If zero has the same media scrutiny that Reagan had, he would have never made it to the US Senate.

Oh, let's put a happy face on it shall we.

Still, 3 years is a long way off and lots could happen. There are a large enough group of people that don't read policy, have no clue as to what's going on and only see's what's in there wallets. If the economy makes a really good turn over the next 3 years, look out. All of a sudden Obama will began to look good to those types of folks again.

Agree with you wholeheartedly. On the other hand I don’t see the economy making much of a recovery...I think the worst is yet to come.

Yep, unfortunately I think your right. Financially, I’m not even close to being ready. Oh well, you do what you can then your faith has to step in and you rely on God. God is always good :)

On health care reform, it's not clear what he could have done differently to appease a notoriously demanding citizenry.

Who was demanding healthcare?

This issue was thrust unbidden into the spotlight by the Obama gang, not wanting to "let a good crisis go to waste."

What drivel this encomium to Hussein is. Another Harvard-educated Chicago slobberer trying to cover for his corrupt Marxist.

Overexposure is a bummer:

Barak Obama may be the first President since William Henry Harrison to talk himself to death.

Politically, I mean.

Some of this is valid. In 2012 the best conservatives can hope for is that a) there is a decent GOP candidate, b) some of the Obama-true-believers stay home because there is really no reason to expect they will vote against him and that c) the people who don’t really pay attention until the end of September will decide they no longer want his hope and change.

That is it, a lousy Democrat president will only be attacked by the media if he is a total fraud and a horse’s ass as Obama is and even then they tread very softly. A Republican president can be one of the top five of all time and he will be relentlessly hounded by the liberal media as if he were Blackbeard the pirate.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your view, there seems to be little possibility of that happening. I can only imagine a real economic turnaround if Obama should suddenly turn 180 degrees and lead the Democrats back to the constitution. Of course if that should happen we would all have to remain indoors at all times, those flying pigs drop some awful messes.

I can’t see this muzzie joker ever being attacked by the media. They have way too much invested in him.

You got that right. It’ll be a cold day in He..double hockey stick. Personally, I don’t think he would know how to go right. He seems to have no real knowledge of who America really is. I don’t mean in book smarts. You can have all the head knowledge in the world but, if there is no heart knowledge, it’s just empty words.
