Oregon Senate: Wyden 49%, Huffman 35%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | February 17, 2010

Another “safe” Democratic senator may not be quite as safe as he thought.

The first Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 telephone survey of likely voters in Oregon finds incumbent Democratic Senator Ron Wyden with a 49% to 35% lead over law professor Jim Huffman, the most prominent Republican reportedly considering running against him.

Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate, and nine percent (9%) are undecided.

Given Oregon’s political leanings, it’s a tough struggle for any Republican candidate against a popular Democrat like Wyden. Still, an incumbent who polls less than 50% at this stage of the campaign is viewed as potentially vulnerable, and this week’s surprise announcement by Indiana Senator Evan Bayh that he will not seek reelection has sent shock waves through Democratic ranks.

It’s interesting to note, too, that Huffman, a political newcomer, is an unknown quantity to 43% of the voters in Oregon, while just nine percent (9%) don’t know enough about Wyden to have an opinion of him. This suggests Huffman may be getting some support just because he isn’t the Democrat.

I found a bio on Huffman.

He sounds like he’d be an articulate critic of liberal policies. He’s more conservative than Gordon Smith, who is the most conservative Senator Oregon has elected in many years. If he did win, chances are he’d be a one-term Senator. But he’s obviously very bright.

Not holding out too much hope coming from Oregon—too many liberals have screwed up that state badly.

I wonder if the Democrats will try to halt elections if Wyden wins.

For the long-term, probably not. But we can make gains in the short term. In a best-case senario, Huffman could be like a Republican Max Baucus, consistantly winning in a state where his party often loses.

Never heard of Huffman, but don’t count us out yet. 20% unemployment can cause even the braindead to think twice.

The key word on Huffman is “Federalist Society.”

A true conservative legal scholar who would fit nicely in a SCOTUS seat.

If he could get elected, we could bargain a judicial appointment for him for Federal court, a stepping stone towards the Supreme Court.

Let’s just say Multnomah (Portland) County and Lane (Eugene) County. The rest of the state is bright red Republican!

He’s closer than Scott Brown 3 weeks before the election. This used to be a conservative state.

Dino Rossi and Dave Reichert are being wooed. Rossi will make a final decision in May.

Wyden could be filmed skinning a live puppy in front of a bunch of toddlers and the idiot voters here in W. Oregon would still vote for him(remember it was the voters here that passed a tax increase on the rich and businesses just last month).

Oregon has the same kind of voters and demography as Massachusetts; this seat is attainable, this year.
