Nuclear plants on hold
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW ^ | Wednesday, February 17, 2010 | Rick Stouffer

A project to build the nation's first new nuclear plant in 30 years is eligible for $8.3 billion in federal loan guarantees -- even though the Westinghouse Electric Co. reactors to be used in the plant don't have final Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval.

President Obama announced Tuesday that the loan guarantees will be offered to four electric utilities that would own the expanded Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Ga.

Two new reactors are to be built there at a cost of about $14 billion. The main sticking point now is the commission's criticisms of Cranberry-based Westinghouse's design for buildings to house its AP 1000 nuclear reactors.

"We're waiting for Westinghouse's detailed, revised shield building submittal in the next few weeks," NRC spokesman Scott Burnell said. "After we give that a quick once-over, we'll be able to provide an update to the overall AP1000 design certification schedule."

Burnell said while Westinghouse has no firm deadline to resubmit the building design, the matter must be resolved before the commission can consider certifying the overall reactor design, a needed step toward construction.

Southern CEO David Ratcliffe said it's too early to determine whether the building issue will affect the schedule to start up the two new units at the Vogtle plant, where two reactors have operated since the late 1980s. The new Unit 3 is projected to begin commercial operations in 2016 and Unit 4, in 2017. Southern's Georgia Power unit will own more than 45 percent of the new project.

And the regulatory commission can delay it till H freezes over...and BTW where are they going to store the waste...no one wants it in their state.

The best way to proceed is to first put individual holds one-at-a-time on construction issues. After the years of delay that result then we can start the real fun: hold after hold related to individual species that may be negatively impacted, followed by holds for potential seismic issues, followed by holds for potential defects with regard to security from terrorism.

To top it off, Westinghouse will need to be sued for not using a sufficient amount of LGBT labor.

I hope they are not building another 70’s era type plant.

We have a depository in Nevada. Thats where the waste should go. On the other hand if we had a rational nation, we would use the “waste” reprocess it in Breeder reactors, and use it fuel again, like the French have been doing for 30 years. But we have knownothing NIMBY nitwits in the US instead. Don’t whine when you are sitting in the dark or can’t afford your electric bill.

True...I can hear it now “We’ll take the L’s and the G’s, but we won’t take the Bi’s and the Trannies....”

dingy, botox and bambi are NOT that smart. And wasn't it dingy that wants Yuca Mountain closed?

Same holds true with building prisons. It's actually cheaper to keep the prep locked up for their full sentences, 68% are repeat offenders...some 30-50 or more times. Yet that is one of the first places they 'cut' in budget cuts.

I worked at Westinghouse for a couple of years and know a little about the new reactor. I’m trying to figure out when the licensed design became an unlicensed design. It was some time after they sold 4 units to China and as far as I know the units China are getting are of the original design. I think obama/NRC pulled a fast one on Westinghouse.

Hence the 90% support for Dims among the top defense theiving lawyers...think of the goldmine they have...recidivism is a beauty in the eye of those beholders.

I suppose the spent fuel can be stored on site as it always has been for the 100 existing plants. They’re not storing any waste at Yucca now, it’s just that they built most of the facility and now big gov. won’t allow it’s use. GO figure.

I know it’s been said a million times, but can’t someone, somewhere, make these lunkheads see that we have more nukes roaming around the world than they could ever possibly control, more every day, countries using them for 60-80% of their energy and we are GOING BANKRUPT funding JIHAD with oil money?

And not to put too fine a point on it, but the lefties insist on keeping tankers full of hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil roaming around instead of containing the process in safe off shore rigs like we did in the Gulf with KATRINA roaring through?

We really are crazy to allow this to happen to us without tearing DC apart brick by brick. I am losing what’s left of my GD mind over this crap.

BILLIONS spent on Yucca...BILLIONS.

We are the only industrialized nation in the world that puts limits, if not prohibits, using our own natural resources.

In order to get the design re-approved they no doubt will have to make sure that no palm goes ungreased or featherbed goes unfilled.

Yep, and for local jails its more like 85%. Here's a couple of good ones. This week a killer out on bail, was awaiting a verdict in Memphis, TN BTW it was guilty...asked to go tinkle...never returned, man hunt on now.

Next one, now this one is personal, I witnessed and lived it, know it to be true. When our 16 year old son's killer was on 'trial' it took many trips, 2 years going to court monthly to get to that 20 year 'plea bargain' and in one of those trips awaiting his turn to go before the judge, this other preps lawyer stands up and says "your Honor" my client is not in your court because he is in another judges court today. Bail was NOT recinded, just a new date set for him to appear.

I fought 7 parole hearings, the first just 10 months after he was sentenced. Managed to squeeze 16.5 years out of the 20 years.

I think they see it, jess. But remember their real goal is to destroy America or as they put it ‘level the playing field’.

They are watermelons, not enviro whackos.
