Women's hockey in Olympics in jeopardy because of lopsided results, lack of interest
NY Daily News ^ | 2/15/10 | Flip Bondi

When Natalie Darwitz heard the Canada-Slovakia score on Saturday night, she grimaced at the 18-goal shutout slaughter.

"A little bit," said Darwitz, captain of the U.S. women's ice hockey team. "It's a delicate subject."

Darwitz and the Americans were not thrilled yet again with their rival, Canada, because they fully understand what the Canadians can't seem to grasp: Their young sport is very much in jeopardy, forever the next potential target of the International Olympic Committee. Women's hockey could easily become softball, banished for lack of global competition, and these lopsided, first-round scores are not helping matters.

"It very well could be," Darwitz said. "Softball was a two or three-team tournament, too. I hope not, though. This is all we have. This is our Stanley Cup."

So after the Americans moved out to an eight-goal lead in the second period Sunday against China, they began to pull back. They cycled the puck in the corners instead of shooting through screens. The two-time defending world champions tried not to run up the score, and still won by far too much at Thunderbird Arena, 12-1 - the very same score as the last time these teams met at the Olympics in 2002 at Salt Lake City.

It has to be more interesting than women's basketball or women's soccer, which compare poorly to watching paint peel.

Women’s hockey? How about women’s mud wrestling? Heck, even women’s rugby. They could get Hooter’s to cater.

;-)

No. It’s worse. It was on tonight and I was laughing at how bad they all were. The Canadians weren’t that good either, just butch. They were playing Switzerland and it was truly boring. Now if they’d started fighting every 30 seconds, I’d probably watch it. Or if they changed the rules so that they could beat each other with the sticks. Or pick up the puck and throw it down the ice/ at each other. Other than that, ehh. Who cares?

If they axe women's hockey, they should bring in snowskating in the Winter Olympics.

Pretty much, that’s the view of the IOC. It’s not our fault that we’re better athletes at sports that take more strength, skill and vigor than traditionally European sports.

Let’s face it — womyn’s basketball, softball, baseball, hockey, soccer, handball, rugby, et. seq. are bad versions of the men’s games and feature, for the most part, ugly womyn no one wants to watch.

Screaming at the wind (wynd?) doesn’t put eyeballs on the TV screen.

The market decides and, in the privacy of the home: men (who control the remote 1/2 the time) don’t want to watch bad badly executed sports and women (who control the remote 2/3 of the time) want to see the grace events (ice skating, gymnastics, etc.).

Gentlemen. We must combine the aforementioned suggestions to save the winter games. All the violence of normal ice hockey with the appeal of beach volleyball. If we build it they will come.

Are you sure about that?

I never considered women’s ice hockey could get dropped, but yeah, other than USA, Canada, Russia; it ain’t gonna be a close contest. No way. That being said, I find their game better than watching ice dancing. I mean c’mon. I’d rather see some ladies going hard at it to get it in the net rather than some guy in sequined tights skate around.

That being said, I do fear we might have witnessed the end of it.

Funny thing is, most of these women could probably break all your noses and kick your butts if you said this to their faces :)

The internet is a lovely place to post such things though, since no one knows who you are.
