Unionized Rhode Island Teachers Refuse To Work 25 Minutes More Per Day, So Town Fires All Of Them

A school superintendent in Rhode Island is trying to fix an abysmally bad school system. Her plan calls for teachers at a local high school to work 25 minutes longer per day, each lunch with students once in a while, and help with tutoring. The teachers' union has refused to accept these apparently onerous demands.
The teachers at the high school make $70,000-$78,000, as compared to a median income in the town of $22,000. This exemplifies a nationwide trend in which public sector workers make far more than their private-sector counterparts (with better benefits).
The school superintendent has responded to the union's stubbornness by firing every teacher and administrator at the school.
A sign of things to come?

Glory, glory hallelujah!!! Everyone on FR needs to email this superintendent and not only congratulate him for his bravery and sanity, but for taking a much needed first step in neutering the out of control teacher's union!!!!!

Good move. I'll bet there are plenty of teachers looking for work that would be happy to fill the openings. Very much like what Reagan did with the striking air traffic controllers.

We can hope so. In Detroit, mayor Dave Bing hasn't hesitated to fire union bus drivers and stop deducting union dues from city employees paychecks. And he's a democrat.
I think they may be wearing out their welcome.

Her name is School Supt. Frances Gallo. This lady needs to run for POTUS!
The town is supposedly dirt poor, 50% of the kids are failing, median income is $22,000 and teachers making almost $80,000.
This story should be on Drudge and Rush.

never mind re-building a public skool team, just give {return} the money straight to the parents as vouchers and they will figure out how to maximize return for their children.

Dont let the doors hit your in the pocketbook......
Tough one to take......no leadership in the ranks to come up with a solution. Just feed the same kids the same thing time and time again and you will be replaced.

The town is supposedly dirt poor, When I lived in MA in the '80, Central Falls was known as a Colombian enclave that distributed most of New England's cocaine.

I eat lunch with my students every day. I have 23 minutes for lunch. By the time I go to the bathroom, check my mailbox, answer the email and heat up my lunch...I’m still feeding my face when the next class hits the door. So yeah I eat lunch with my kids every day!
To: FromLori
Somehow I don’t think the union will take this lying down.
