By now, we're all familiar with the global warmists attempt to explain away the record-breaking mid-Atlantic blizzards. Take this, for example, from the New York Times [emphasis added]:
[snip]
So more snow fell from Philly to DC because the temperatures were warmer than normal during the blizzards? That got me wondering: just what were the temperatures in DC on the snow days, and how do they compare to the norm? And guess what?

True, as a rule of thumb, sea water temp in southern Ches Bay >40F=rain; <40F=snow...guides only, not many definites in weatherguessering.
The global warming alarmists have a "science" that ratchets in one direction only, no matter what the objective evidence is.
And they have already shown that they will readily manipulate the data to ensure that is the case.
On another thread it was pointed out that late night infomercial huckster Kevin Trudeau is being hounded by a federal judge for making millions selling books based on fraudulent claims that even a simpleton could see through, if he was of a mind to. But the global warming hucksters are reaping billions and eventually trillions using cooked statistics and even more fantastic claims and the fraud is not being investigated or prosecuted--it is being aided and abetted by our own government.
The explanation is, you got our weather.
The storms that usually would have passed north of there were held to our south by a large mass of Arctic DRY air.
You could see it on the weather maps...large circulating COLD clear air masses here, while you guys got hammered.
By the way...that dusting you got...happens here all the time.
As Dennis Prager so succinctly put it, if the "climate change" isn't "global warming", the Left doesn't care.
If the cold air hadn’t penetrated so far south, they would have had rain, if the . The blocking highs up north would have let the storms slide up into New England where they usually go. These mid-Atlantic storms were caused by cold being where it usually isn’t.
That's kind of confusing. You're not saying that it snows more in cold weather than in warm weather, are you?
The only thing preventing lots of snow was the fact that it was, you know, too warm.
I like this explanation, which should be followed by an ergo.
If too warm a temperature, is the explanation for too little snow, global warming/climate change, cannot have it both ways. Or can they?
According to Dalton’s LAW of gasses air has no capacity to “hold” water. Therefore the entire argument made in the NY Times article is false. In spite of the fact that the false statement to the contrary is widely accepted, it is not so. Higher levels of water vapor in an air mass at warmer temperatures is due solely to the increased evaporation of water caused by the heat/energy. Air has no ability to hold water at any time or at any temperature. It’s the law.
I’m simply saying that if you only select the temperature on days it was known to snow, don’t be surprised if they turn out to be colder than average. If you only select temperatures from winter days on which it rained, don’t be surprised if they are warmer than average.
Cherry picking data to confirm one’s preconceived notions or prejudices is tricky work and should not be done by novices. It takes a dab hand like Phil Jones or Michael Mann to do it right.
Actually moist air conducts heat better. Sounds like they’re trying to play a chicken or the egg game when I’m not sure there’s a chicken or an egg to begin with.
It’s not cherry picking: the warmists were explaining the blizzards by arguing temps were warmer, but in fact when the snow fell it was colder!
Not a weather kind of guy. I had never thought about temperature and the wind outside of chill factor...but that last part makes perfect sense.
We didn’t have -20F the other morning, but we did have the foggy ice event. It was beautiful! The foggy/frosty settling on everything as the sun came up on a 15F morning. Painted everything in a coat of white ice. Even as the sun pushed through the fog, ice crystals reflected and danced in the air.
It was really cool...you could actually watch the air/ice dance.
Your interpretation of Dalton's law is incorrect. Warmer air does "hold more moisture". See any chart of "absolute humidity" to see the maximum amount of water vapor a given volume of air can contain. The water contained by the air is just another gas as far as Dalton's law is concerned.
The headline is totally misleading. Warm air CAN hold more moisture in a given volume than the same volume can hold at a lower temperature.... this is a simple FACT of physics. All that said, using the increased snowfall as evidence of "climate change" is ludicrous.
“Pretty soon the NYT will have a story on how Mark Finklestein tortures puppies.”
LOL: I [governs=Finkelstein] would wear the Times’ libel as a badge of honor!
And just for the record, in case the Times is reading this: I’m an animal lover. I have three parrots that I have to protect against the wintry blasts here in upstate NY. And though I don’t have a dog, my sister who has one calls me the Dog Whisperer because hers takes to me so much!
We’ll be back to Global Warming by mid-summer.
It appears to me that the NYT is nothing more than a propaganda machine catering to the "Archie Bunkers" of the left. IMO the NYT is leading the way to the demise of the dinosaur left wing main stream media with their irrational "journalism." The NYT was a great newspaper many years ago.
Alas for the report, along with more snow in the NE we also got more snow in the SE and the South!
Looks like that could be a signature for global cooling.
Bingo! Just like choosing NOT to abort doesn't count as choice!
