China on Friday demanded the White House cancel a meeting between US President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama, warning that already strained ties between the two powers would be damaged further.
Beijing reacted angrily to the White House announcement that Obama would next week receive the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, accused by China of seeking independence for his homeland.
"We firmly oppose the Dalai Lama visiting the United States and US leaders having contact with him," foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.
"We urge the US side to fully understand the high sensitivity of Tibet-related issues, and honour its commitment to recognise Tibet as part of China and to oppose 'Tibet independence'," he added.
"China urges the US... to immediately call off the wrong decision of arranging for President Obama to meet with the Dalai Lama... to avoid any more damage to Sino-US relations."
The two sides have clashed in recent weeks over a 6.4-billion-dollar US arms deal for Taiwan, with China accusing the United States of violating the "code of conduct between nations" by selling weapons to what it sees as Chinese territory.
Beijing has also been irked by Washington's support for Google after the web giant announced it would no longer abide by China's strict Internet censorship rules and could quit the country over "highly sophisticated" cyberattacks.Related article: China says it has 'no dissidents'
The foreign ministry angrily denied any involvement in the hacking of Gmail accounts and accused Washington of "double standards" after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lamented the restrictions on China's 384 million Internet users.
The White House invitation to the Dalai Lama, who will be in the United States for a week starting Wednesday, also comes as Obama tries to build an international consensus on sanctions against Iran.

F the ChiComs. We will meet with the Dalai Lama if we want. Let them dump US debt....which they are chickenshit to do anyway. Let the chips fall where they may
0bama is a no good punk but he won’t punk out here. The dispute is now public. He will not back down and piss off all the libs (his base) who revere the DL.
He will meet with the DL
Obama will NOT CAVE!.....
He will not cave on this issue. He has to save up his cave ins and bowing and kissing ass of foreign honchos and dictators
Life just got tougher for Zero. Up until now it didn’t matter who he met.
The big question was, curtsy or bow?
>> And when Obama caves to this demand, China will become ever more demanding. <<
Once they realize he is a chump and doormat they will lose all respect for him and hold him in contempt, then they will really start to screw with him.
>> The Commies are becoming more demanding with each passing day. It had unleashed a diabolic diatribe against India over Dalai Lamas visit to the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh which incidentally China deems to be a part of Occupied Tibet. <<
People look to the middle east as a source of the next world war, I’ll bet that if another world war breaks out we will see a front of it be between India and China, and since we are so beholden to China it is bad news for India.
......Once they realize he is a chump....
Do you honestly believe the world does not already take him for a light weight chump?
If you and I know, they surely know

I should have said: MORE of a chump than he already is...
For a guy who has repeatedly said he’s ushering in a new era of friendly diplomacy in American foreign policy, he certainly seems to be doing everything he can to anger the most important foreign power.
Don’t get me wrong - I certainly don’t have a problem with tweaking the noses of pseudo-Communist tyrants and standing up for religious freedom, but Obama could at least stop pretending that he’s being any more diplomatic than Bush was.
I remember a time when the U.S. government at least attempted to protect American industry, American jobs.
I've practiced a boycott of Chinese products for several years now. I do everything I can to avoid purchasing anything from China.
Big whoopty doo some say. Like YOUR gonna make a difference.
Yep, and the boycott of cheap Chinese goods is growing.
I'm not against free trade. I love capitalism and the free market exchange and folks making an honest profit.
What I'm against is corporate leaders engaging in practices that endanger our national security.
Just read all the reports of how Chinese officials have subverted our election process, grown their military double digits for a decade now, maneuvering to gain economic advantage, cyber advantage, space advantage......all done by selling cheap Chinese goods to our market.
Obama: "Did you paint this? Want to make my next campaign poster?!!"
they’ll meet but what have we given up to china on that meeting. because you just know a deal would be worked out seeing as this is another carter administration with no balls or leadership
Could this be a Hilary plot to do Obama in?
Japanese toys flooded American markets in the 1930s, and Japan took it's payment back in the form on American-made steel ... steel that was turned into battleships, cannons .. etc.
Perhaps. But knowing how he always tries to make everyone
happy, he'll find some way to show some middle ground.
Remember that keeping China HAPPY is paramount for
Obama to be able to FUND his social agenda. There just isn't
enough tax revenue coming in to do it alone, and continue paying
the interest on the existing debt.
I can see him meeting the Dalai Lama at some place other than
the White House, not have the American Flag present at the
meeting, or even have the Chinese Flag PRESENT in the room to
show the predominance of the Red State at the White House.
Owebama wants to meet the Dalai Lama in order to recieve “total consiousness”...so, at least, he’ll have that going for him.
I’m not against free trade. Look at Toyota. They (until lately) had a great product. Very dependable.
There has got to be a healthy balance. Fair trade, that is.
Our traitorous government has bowed to the corporate lobby and allowed good paying factory positions to flood outta this country.
We cannot compete with labor that makes a paltry wage, little to no benefits.
Industry that pollutes their waterways and land at will. Little safety regulations, far different tax structure.
Our government has killed industry in this country.
Methinks this is just the beginning and that our Chinese overlords and most favored debt-holder nation will be making a lot bigger demands in the coming years. I agree with others saying that China’s grip on our national indebtedness is fast becoming a national security threat.
Free trade? ... Fair trade? ... There’s a difference.
“Traitorous government,” government that “killed industry” — Who voted our government into office?
“We cannot compete ...” Competition requires competitors, and it’s a real world fact that quitters lose.
Then too, pollution control and safety assurances are wonderful to have, but they have to be paid for ... and today’s America is long on debit and short on credit.
Who was it that said: “Brother, you asked for it”?
