Vallejo police advise citizens against arming themselves
Vallejo Times-Herald ^ | 02/11/2010 | Rachel Raskin-Zrihen

Fearful Vallejo residents thinking about arming themselves after a rash of violent crime may be jumping the gun, police said.

Police Department spokesman Abel Tenorio said he has read online comments from people saying they're alarmed and may arm themselves -- something police don't recommend.

"The Constitution allows citizens who are not otherwise prohibited from having a gun to have a firearm in their home," Vallejo Police Department Support Services Manager Bill Powell said. "But we don't want any kind of tragedy to occur because someone got a gun and they're not familiar with it."

Unless you're licensed to carry one, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon, including some knives, Tenorio said.

"We're suggesting people be more cautious about when they go out -- and this is not specific to Vallejo, but everywhere," Tenorio said. "Be aware of your surroundings, follow your gut feelings. If your gut feeling says to leave someplace, then leave.

"And be especially careful at night. Park in lighted areas. Walk in groups at night if you can. Have your cell phone ready to call police if you're walking alone." Having an alarm installed at one's home also is not a bad idea, he said.

"Also, start a neighborhood watch," Tenorio said. "Have interior and exterior lights on a timer, put a 'beware of dog' sign up, even if you don't have a dog."

In the past 10 days in Vallejo there has been a widely publicized beating and robbery of a city worker, as well as two homicides, three shootings and several stabbings.

"I think we have to look at a longer period," he said. "One week could just be a bad week. If it's still going on in two weeks or a month, then we'll have a serious issue and have to...

A rifle means you’re going to a fight. A pistol means you got caught in one.

I like that one ;^)

Thank you for saving me the typing.

This attitude CANNOT be totally attributed to ignorance.
It has to have a large element of elitist ruling class CONTROL over the citizenry.

While teh suggestions concerning aviodance are certainly appropriate, they are a single component to security and safety.

Carry a firearm , be serious about it, train, practice (lie and dry) to become as skilled as poossible in your mind and hands.

Seems our governemnt, even at small town levels is bent on insuring that sheep remain sheep... ever wonder why? It is always about control and government being all encompassing.

I am a sheepdog by nature and training, I won’t surrender my teeth.

the simple answer is MOVE to Arizona, like I did. short of that, Just go to Arizona and get a Concealed Weapons Permit, yes you can get one if you don’t live there. Then Push for the National Reciprocity Law that failed by One vote in the Senate last year.

“The Constitution allows citizens who are not otherwise prohibited from having a gun to have a firearm in their home,”
Ex- Squeeze me?
Okay to quote:
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

HTF, does it say what this idiot claims?

And where does the 2nd amendment specify any kind of “Training” requirement?

Because who gets to ‘Decide’ how much training you should be required to complete?

That’s my question to people about arming themselves:

It’s late at night or you’re out on a lonely city street and some thug is trying to break into your apartment or following you on the street, meaning you harm.

Would you rather have a way to defend yourself, or would you rather wait for an eternity of 10 – 20 – 30 minutes for a government employee to do it for you?

People need to get it through their heads – the Far-left National Socialists don’t care about people, all they care about is power.

My wife attended a self defense class and was told to program the Eureka police dept direct line into her cell phone as our 911 calls are routed through the CHP call center in... Vallejo!!!

Some areas can triangulate your location.

Have your cell phone ready to call police if you're walking alone."

If this is the way the chief wants it, then the organizers of a gun rights group should take him up on that one. Tell the members to call the police every time a noise is heard outside your house. Every time a dog barks. Every time a strange car goes through the neighborhood. Have the hundreds of your members call at least six times a night for every little fear that might happen. Continue until the chief has the little light in his noggin go on.
