We're not looking to give Bill Clinton a hard time on a day when he's undergone heart surgery. But our forbearance doesn't extend to Tom Brokaw when he misstates history . . .
On this evening's Hardball, responding to Chris Matthews' question as to what motivates Clinton nowadays, Brokaw surmised that he is trying to improve his place in history given that, as president, impeachment proceedings had been "initiated" against him.
Initiated?

i’m fairly certain that they had bjclinton on charges of treason (some of which is detailed in the cox report), but didn’t want to level those charges at him... because it would damage the office. (hence the statement from a senator “if you saw the classified evidence i saw, you’d vote to impeach as well”.. obviously, it had nothing to do with witness tampering or conduct unbecoming the office)
at that point, they probably approached him, showed him the evidence, offered the gentleman’s way out... ie: we’ll level some embarrassing and bogus charge... he’d resign... and that would be that. he most likely agreed... and then double crossed them when they made their bogus charges public, thereby forcing them to prove the charges.
red badges should never be allowed through named doors. obvious statements overruled during the 90s.
That's why I wanted Barry to win the nomination over Hillary. Hillary would have given us a more competant brand of socialism. Barry was just going to wee-wee all over himself and his party. I didn't want Slick and his crime family back in business for a third term. I was shocked that they left when their second term was over and I didn't want to give them a second shot at it.
Personally, I'm good with that, no matter how you spell it! We gotta empty the trash heap; there was a great start with Murtha, so let's rock on...
In 95 when Bill Ayres patted BO on his head, he brought BO into the Clinton’s inner circle as their toady.
The Clinton’s had no intention of leaving the WH in 96 if he lost the election. In 96 the Chinese got caught shipping fully auto weapons to the gangs in Los Angeles. It was described as enough weapons for a small army. The Chinese did the same thing for Mugabee a few years back.
BO’s still the Clinton’s toady.
"Precisely."
No, a previous poster was correct. Impeach and indict mean basically the same thing -- to accuse of wrongdoing.
He was 'tried' in the Senate and acquitted, not convicted.
Thank you for that statement of sanity. Zero is merely the paint on what's left of the Clinton machine. If Hillary was in office right now, the hell she'd have already unleashed would have locked the country down into martial law and unleashed WWIII.
Well, as bad as Clinton was, I do not think he was ashamed of this country. The same cannot be said for that guy in the WH now....
The Dr. Goebels News Media Seal of Approval.
I woukldn’t be Tom Brokaw on the end of a barge pole.
His teleprompter may be broken.
it is eleven years tomorrow, Feb. 12, 1999, that the Senate under Chester Trent Lott failed in its duty to remove an impeached President, who had committed perjury and suborned perjury. Democrats and Republican Senators alike failed their duty to the Constitution and to the citizenry by refusing to conduct a trial.
Why? Well, Hillary had the 800+ FBI files on the players, now, didn’t she?
In the years since, I have come to believe that the Monica Lewinsky affair was a feint, to turn everyone’s attention from the more serious crime of selling military and technology secrets to China for campaign money.
What we need is an unredacted copy of the Barrett Report.
The sordid truth about the treason of Bill and Hillary Clinton needs to be exposed.
I wish him well tonight only becasue I want him to live long enough to see the inside of a cell insode Ft. Leavenworth.
Time gives us an interesting perspective. Had Gore done the right, decent, and proper thing, and called for Clinton to resign, Gore would most likely have been easily elected in 2000. And then, after 9/11, when would we have been? I know, Al would have denounced the attacks because they contributed to global warming. Just goes to show you that God does indeed exist, that He loves this country, and that He has a sense of humor...
They conducted a trial. It is called an impeachment. They failed to obtain a conviction, but it is highly inaccurate to say they refused to conduct a trial.
Impeachment already occurred by the action of the House.
Removal could only come through a conviction by the Senate.
A real trial was not allowed by the Senate, and everyone knows it. The “trial” that occurred was not conducted like a real trial. Evidence and witnesses were banned from being heard. And the GOP did that.
The House issued Articles of Impeachment, which is the equivalent of an indictment. The actual Impeachment, is the trial in the Senate, which then results in a vote to convict or not convict (or to remove or not remove). Regardless of your opinion of the efficacy of the trial, a trial was conducted.
The Articles of Impeachment are just that—impeachment.
Impeachment occurred. Once the House approved any of the Aritcles, impeachment occurred.
Removal did not.
And the trial was a trial in name only, whose outcome was preordained by a gutless GOP majority in the Senate.
charged but not convicted.
I have to admit I got guilty pleasure seeing Hillary lose to Obama. Of course now we are stuck with Obama which is certainly no pleasure. On the other hand I prefer a stupid enemy who tells you how evil he is to a snake like Hillary who can destroy you while smiling at you and making you think she is your friend.
The MSM were at the oily obsequious worst reporting Clinton’s heart surgery. CNN was especially nauseating. Unbelievably bad. The breathlessness, the deep concern, quivering lips. Yet, Candy Crowley assured us ‘his spirits are high’. Oh, and Hillary finally arrived at the hospital after much discussion about exactly when and how she found out he was ill. Compare this to the coverage of Cheney’s heart problems. They have no shame.
