"I want to speak up for the American people and say: No, we really do have some good common-sense solutions. I can be a messenger for that. Don't have to have a title to do it."
This is a pitch-perfect recital of the populist message that has worked in campaigns past. There are times when the American people are looking for something more: for an Eisenhower, who liberated Europe; an FDR or a Kennedy or a Bush, all unashamed aristocrats; or an Obama, with eloquence and brains.
But in the present mood of the country, Palin is by all odds a threat to the more uptight Republican aspirants such as Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty -- and potentially, to Obama as well.

Was there really anything worth reading after that?
I'm going to guess it's because she's female. I agree it's a real consideration, if it's accurate to say she can't win without a certain percentage of black and Latin-culture votes. Although I would think the black vote would be a write-off anyway, simply because she's not a Democrat.
“...President Bush appealed to enough people outside of the traditional Republican base to get elected, especially amongst socially conservative latinos and blacks...”
Palin will get the same small percentage of conservative Blacks that Bush got which is even larger than the size of the Armenian-American vote.
You fail to see how a hardcore conservative like Jesse Helms was able to win again and again in the most “liberal” of the Southern states. The appeal is that he was so conservative. The average California voter does not pick up that a Palin is far more conservative than a Schwarzenegger and they vote for Arnold the first time thinking he is “too conservative”.
I just cannot see Palin getting nearly enough of the black and latino vote to win. And I question whether she could have won an election as Governor in any state but Alaska, given their demographics.
Reagan was elected Governor of California twice, a very diverse state, so obviously that showed he could connect with enough people who didnt fit the tradition Republican supporter. I just cant see Sarah appealing outside of that demographic at all. Fair or unfair thats just how I see it.
Even President Bush appealed to enough people outside of the traditional Republican base to get elected, especially amongst socially conservative latinos and blacks. But Ive heard many of those very same latinos express their intense dislike of Palin.
And I dont see Palin as being particularly good at reaching out to those people. She does fine within her own element, but its going to take a lot more than that for her to even come close to winning the nomination, much less POTUS.
Zo is awesome, and I’ve often wondered why he isn’t out in front of blacks more often.
I think the label “populist” is being used because of the derogatory baggage that the term has.
The real description of Palin’s appeal is “anti-elitist”.
We’re all getting real sick and tired of the elitists telling us how to live our lives, down to the food we eat, the water we use to flush, and the kind of lightbulbs we can have in our houses.
“...Palins appeal is anti-elitist...”
Anti-elitist has a nice ring to it...I like the sound of that....hhmmmmm...yes, you have something there.
I like it.
Alot!
When enough blacks, Latinos, whites , Asians and everybody else is broke enough, hungry enough and has just plain enough of Mr.”Hopey-Changey’’ they’ll vote for her.
The elitists need to understand, and get it through their heads quickly, that they are walking down a road that will lead to a very volatile situation in this country. A situation that won’t turn out to be healthy for them.
He’s as elegant and brainy as the Press Corpse.
Pray for America and Gov Palin
He is intelligent -- just as a computer is intelligent. What both lack is morality. In both computers and humans, morality is a process of using one's built-in capabilities to interact with a higher power that comes from outside the unit. He seeks power, but ultimately isn't plugged into The Source. Look for his battery to fail shortly.
So have a black American running mate. Maybe Condi Rice?
I think it’s disingenuous to say that Obama doesn’t have brains and eloquence. That combined with his horrible policies and opinions are what makes him so dangerous. If he was stupid, unpersuasive, and and ineffective at communicating his ideas, this country wouldn’t have so much to worry about. To underestimate your adversary is a mistake imo.
I think Sarah is the only chance we have to beat him in 2012.
Now, this graph suggests that Sarah needs a new pen for every speech. That would be a terrible waste. Okay, if the pen is used up after each speech signing autographs, we can understand that.
If each of us donates one pen during the time Sarah is in office, we can really help her bring down the deficit.
Intelligence is ability to reason, ZERO has none. He is only driven by programmed ideology.
Obama is undoubtedly smart, but he is not nearly as smart as his followers believe him to be. His eloquence makes him sound smarter than he is. There are concepts that seem to elude him, simply economic ones, for instance. If you listen to him talk (un-prompted), its obvious that while he is bright, he is no megabrain.
And I'll propose this: There is an undercurrent of Racism in the idea that a black person who is "well spoken" must be very intelligent, because the rest "of those black people, who speak in the negro dialect" are simply dumb. But to be able to speak well and be black at the same time, makes you a Genius!
I've heard it said here on FR, scratch the surface of a liberal, and underneath you find a Racist.
I just cannot see Palin getting nearly enough of the black and latino vote to win.
I don’t think race will determine the next election. Race determined the last one. That said, I am not so sure that the hispanics (white people with an accent) are hard over for bammy. The blacks will vote as they always do. Given that 75% of independents and 25% of dems voted for Brown in MA I don’t think you can expect a normal election in 2012. We will see in 2010. If name recognition is all that it is said to be by the media mavens, then who will have a recognizable name bigger than Sarah? Further, arguments of experience and competence cannot be made by those supporting bammy; they obviously don’t rate experience and competence highly. Finally, based on experience and competence would you support Romney or Palin? Give me the conservative, you can have the button down RINO.
Palin can win with 8% of the black vote and about 38% of each of the Latino, Asian and Jewish vote—and that’s about what she’ll get.
