Interview with Sarah Palin (Palin *NOT* for Amnesty)
Univision ^ | October 26, 2008 | Univision

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

I found this. Read the entire interview in which she states that she's for McCain/Bush style amnesty.

You have a different understanding of English than I do, especially when contained in "old" news. These statements are the totality of her comments relating to the subject in that interview.

Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?
I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?
There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?
No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great  country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

No mention of Bush. No mention of McCain. The law, as it is presently formulated, does not bar an illegal alien from ever becoming a citizen based solely upon their illegal presence in this country. It puts limitations on the the acceptance of application for legal entry into this country on them, but does not bar them permanently from becoming a legal resident nor a citizen.

I am completely for all of these measures and have thought so for years.

I simply don’t buy the “pathway to citizenship” = “let’s give them all citizenship and allow them to vote right now” mindset.

Nobody has defined “pathway to citizenship”. For all any of these people on this thread know, it “pathway to citizenship” may involve the implementation of all of these measures you listed, allowing the illegal aliens to register at the border as they leave the country and starting a database to control the people who wish to come back in legally with work visas, opening a prospect to future citizenship.

Is that plausible? Sure.

Practical? Don’t know.

The best idea? I doubt it, but I am willing to listen.

Has anyone ASKED Sarah Palin what her concept of “a path to citizenship” might be? No.

Do the people screaming “AMNESTY!” at the top of their lungs on this thread sound asinine? Yes.

This thread is just another sordid example of the lengths to which anti-Palin posters will go.

These threads certainly bring out massive amounts of arguing.

And I have yet to see any of them solve anything.

All I see is comments turning to arguments turning to insults, with both sides digging in their heels even more than before.

Probably end up over at DU. Give the DUmmies something to laugh about.

And with things going so badly for the Dems, they'll love seeing the personal attacks and infighting over here.

By the way, whom do you support for 2012?

"I don't know yet. But after finding this interview, NOT PALIN for sure. Maybe a true small-government conservative libertarian (with a small "L") who won't turn our nation into a third-world nation."

Sometimes you say Ron Paul, are you still favoring that direction?

Truth is a cleanser from the Left Wing talking points

Palin: we need to close the borders. They are called illegal aliens for a reason and if they are not going to follow the rules they should not be in our country.

It’s pretty simple I ratched that one down to the simple answer because its an easier answer than some politicians want it to make it be. you close the borders. You get more agressive about cracking down on the illegal aliens and we take it serious what our border patrol officers are trying to do

December 2009
Lars Larson radio talk show

LARS: The amnesty proposal that was defeated in Congress — in your view, was that amnesty for illegals and would you back amnesty for a path to citizenship, as the current president calls it?

SARAH PALIN: No, I’m not for amnesty. Let’s ratchet this down quite simply to remember what we’re referring to. Illegal aliens are called “illegal” for a reason. We need to secure our borders and I am not for amnesty.

And there are humane ways to deal with the 11-13 million illegal aliens who are in our country right now, but if they’re not going to follow the rules, they need to get out.

No one who knows this issue and cares about it can ignore rhetoric that includes phrases like “pathway to citizenship,” and clearly leaves the implication that most of the millions who have crossed our borders illegally are going to be allowed to stay here.

I understand the parsing of words in this case is ambivalent, but can't that "pathway to citizenship" be construed to mean, "MUST return to Mexico first and await the usual immigration protocol"?

Just sayin'.

FWIW, I'd prefer Palin to come out ablaze ala Tancredo.

Once again, you prove your ignorance. I’ve worked as hard as anyone in the country to defeat Mitt Romney, whom I consider to be the most liberal Governor in the history of our republic, and a complete fraud.

But, I’ve opposed him on principle. Just like I oppose Mrs. Palin based on principle.

Of course, compared to Mitt Romney, she is a saint.

But, I don’t make my decisions by comparing one candidate to another. I make them based on comparisons to the founding principles of our nation.

Do you ever tire of harrassing me with the same nonsense thread after thread after thread?

If she didn't I'd feel betrayed. For now I'd rather assume her word and intent means something more than 99% of the politicians out there.

You can only feel betrayed after she commits allowing them to stay as she has stated. By then it will be too late.

It’s difficult to take you serious after you posted this on another thread.

“The Iraq campaign was the worst mistake we’ve made in foreign policy in a long, long time - if not the worst. If you haven’t been there, then you must rely on the whitewashed news that would be the only information you have. The Iraqi people were much better off under, and appreciated, Saddam Hussein. It’s none of our business what happens in another country if their own people support it and it doesn’t affect us (which Saddam Hussein didn’t). Our founding fathers would have never supported our invasion of Iraq under the false pretenses for which we invaded; we should have just left him alone. Saddam Hussein hated terrorists as much as we do. There was zero toleration for terrorism by Saddam; he would feed them into a wood chipper feet first just to hear them scream their life away. I know this from our interpreters who were all Iraqi nationals that lived under the madman. However mad he was, he was their leader and they supported him. That’s why Iraqis, not so-called foreign terrorists, fight us day-and-night to get us out of their land.”

You're just plain nuts, first you put a wrong title in your thread header, use a tired old 2008 campaign video as your point, then you insist what she says must be amnesty even though she clearly says she's against it, won't deal with her recent quotes against amnesty, and now you insist on total 100% perfection (in your eyes of course) from your candidates.

So now for the big question I want you to answer, who is this person you think is totally honest that can lead us?

If you were not aware of this interview, you were not following the 2008 election very closely. As some of the FReepers have stated, you obviously missed Palin’s recent interviews with Rush Limbaugh and Lars Larson, when - not a part of the McCain ticket - was directly asked the question and can out strongly against amnesty (”Illegal means just that ... illegal”)

It’s funny how many Palin-bashers “haven’t decided on a candidate.” Just saying!

You're either dishonest or stupid.

Read the VERY NEXT question in the interview. You're being intellectually dishonest because it contradicts what you thought about Palin. I'm sorry, but I'm for the truth no matter who it is.

LOL,

Hasn’t this interview clip been posted here about a dozen times before this. It has been beat to death. More currently Sarah is saying nothing specific about any policy including this subject. That way we can reference her ‘current’ positions in defense of her over and over.

I think in a year we need to create the ‘draft Sarah for President’ PAC. This idea is looking more and more fun to me every day.

Thanks. If she is against illegal immigration - I support her. I am still not sure about Rubio but people have posted things where he said he is against it. We got burned by Juan McCain friend - Mel Martinez aka Tony Montana.

What do you propose we do; just tell 15 million Mexicans to go home?

Do you believe that’s realistic?
Do you think legal hispanics will ever vote GOP again?
