A Manchester-by-the-Sea man arrested for stockpiling weapons and ammunition in his home allegedly told police he was preparing for Armageddon.
Gregory D. Girard, 45, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly storing approximately 20 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
Just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Manchester-by-the Sea police executed a search warrant at 23 Bridge St., police said. Girard faces four counts of possession of an infernal device and four counts of possession of a dangerous weapon. Additional charges are pending, police said.
Mr. Girard indicated he was preparing for Armageddon, which he felt was imminent, and he felt martial law would soon be imposed, Chief Glenn McKiel said in a statement.
In addition to the weapons and ammunition, police found a large collection of camouflage clothing, knives, bulletproof vests, helmets, and several pairs of handcuffs. They also discovered stockpiles of medicine and nonperishable foods. An illegal indoor shooting range was also found in the attic, police said.
Police seized all the weapons and ammunition and revoked Girards license to carry firearms.
Police negotiators attempted to reach Girard by phone before executing the search warrant but were unsuccessful. Tactical officers evacuated two other condominium units in the building and brought residents to the police department while the search was completed.
Girard has no criminal record, according to police. He was to be arraigned today in Salem District Court.

You will be the first one on the list when they come to get them.
Sheesh! And I thought it was just a typo.
“You will be the first one on the list when they come to get them.”
The thing is though, nobody’s coming to get my guns, because I own them legally. Zero’s election may make some people think that their 2nd amendment rights are at risk, but in reality that’s pretty far from the truth.
If at some point this country elects someone who really does want to take our legal right to own firearms away, the people who come to take them will be met with firearms, and I’ll likely be killed for using mine against them.
Hmmm... It is of course your perogative to think such a thing, but consider these statements:
"I have no problem with requiring people to have to register with the government in order to attend a political event."
"I have no problem with requiring people to have to register with the government in order to attend a church service."
"I have no problem with requiring people to have to register with the government in order to publish on the internet."
"I have no problem with requiring people to have to register with the government to avoid random searches of thier premises."
"I have no problem with requiring people to have to register with the government before attending gatherings of more than three unrelated persons."
I could go on like this all day, but I'm sure you get my drift: a right that you have to apply for and that can be withdrawn at will is not a right at all.
I certainly do get your drift, hopefully you got mine too.
Wasn’t alive to see that tour, but a great album indeed.
I support (within limits) background checks. I don't support registration. And I'd rather take my chances on criminal having guns that sign my rights away.
Of course I know who Eric Holder is.
In actuality the law enforcement agencies are fearful that Joe the average citizen would do a better job of policing the frontier, its all about job security nowadays baby!
Did Santa come to your house this year, too?
I haven’t heard anything like that from him myself...if you have a link to him saying he’s desperate to end the 2nd amendment, I’d definitely check it out.
If he has said that and I just missed it, his position still wouldn’t allow him to do that. He can’t make or change laws. Still though, I’d like to read about that if that’s what he’d desperately like to see happen.
No, but having too many legal things just ain't right. People who have too many legal things must be arrested!
