While the liberal mainstream media sings John Murtha's praises, his legacy is nonetheless tainted ad infinitum by his Abscam involvement and his slanderous Iraq war criticism. Dying yesterday at Virginia Hospital Center from complications arising from gallbladder surgery, John Murtha was the exorbitantly long-serving congressman from Pennsylvania's 12th district, having been in Congress for a whopping, almost 40 years. To hear the liberal media tell it, Murtha was a stout defender of the military and noble, yet that conveniently glosses over many episodes in his too-long career that can only bring to mind the word "unethical" at best, or "misconduct" at worst. If there's anything he ought to be held up for, it's that he was a bona fide poster boy for term limits if there ever was one.

In 2006, Representative Murtha became better known to the public in general for his very public accusations against a group of Marines serving in Iraq. He accused them of cold-blooded murder in what was referred to as the Haditha Massacre. Those Marines spent two-years in prison in Camp Pendleton. They were eventually cleared of the charges that had been made against them. Murtha never acknowledged the damage he had done to their lives and the reputation of the Marine Corp and never apologized for making the accusations.
It was strongly suspected that Murtha accused the Haditha Marines in order to help the democrats gain a majority in the House of Representatives and to get appointed at the House Majority Leader. The democrats gained a majority in the House that year, but Murtha did not get the position he requested.
I have nothing to say about Murtha, except that he is the only ex-Marine I have ever met and one of the few I have heard of.

I cannot give Murtha a pass simply for his past service. I dont know what happened to him, political corruption I suppose, but the only thing I can say about Murtha and still be nice is that somewhere along the way, he forgot what it is to be a Marine.
