Democratic Climate Revolt
Wall Street Journal ^ | FEBRUARY 7, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 02/07/2010 6:42:59 PM PST by ricks_place

A bipartisan effort to stop the EPA's anticarbon crusade.

The Obama Administration has been moving full-speed ahead on anticarbon regulation, never mind waiting for Congress to pass a bill. But now opposition is building among senior Democrats, with two powerful committee Chairmen introducing a bill last week to bar the Environmental Protection Agency from declaring that carbon is a dangerous pollutant.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is busy writing new rules that would let her drive a tax-and-regulation bulldozer through the U.S. economy under laws never meant to apply to greenhouse gases. Ms. Jackson is expected to issue new anticarbon regulations for cars and trucks next month before moving on to power plants and other industries.

This is all too much for Missouri's Ike Skelton and Minnesota's Collin Peterson, the Chairmen of the House Armed Services and Agriculture Committees, respectively. Along with Missouri Republican Jo Ann Emerson, they are pushing a two-page bill that would amend the Clean Air Act to restore Congress's original intent and strip CO2 and other greenhouse gases from the statutory language.

This is bipartisanship we can believe in. Such legislation would vaporize the EPA's "endangerment finding" for carbon and thus require the Administration to use democratic debate and persuasion if it really wants to reshape the energy markets and impose huge new costs on American consumers. What a thought.

"If Congress doesn't do something soon, the EPA is going to cram these regulations through all on their own," Mr. Peterson said. "I have no confidence that EPA can regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act without severe harm to all taxpayers."

Added Mr. Skelton: "Simply put, we cannot tolerate turning over the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions to unelected bureaucrats at EPA. America's energy and environmental policies should be set by Congress." Yes, they should be.

more than a wee bit of smarts.

People with college degrees often believe in incredibly stupid things.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has an agenda but she also has a summa cum laude degree from Tulane University’s School of Chemical Engineering and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University. More than a wee bit of smarts.

I work in Silicon Valley and know lots of people who have more impressive credentials than Lisa Jackson and some of these people are as dumb as a box of rocks. And don't for a micro-second let anyone tell you that AFFIRMATIVE ACTION isn't a prime reason she got her degrees. They give them away at places like you mentioned and I've been on a few prestigious campuses myself so I know of what I speak. I've seen it more that a few times. Lisa Jackson couldn't make it in private industry without AA. If she does understand what she's doing then she is beyond despicable.

Yup, but there might be enough votes to override.

And what are Paul Krugman’s creds? Education and intelligence (and for that matter, integrity) are not one in the same.

What does regulating C02 have to do with taking care of the environment? C02 is not a pollutant, it is essential for life, plants absolutely rave about it, and all of us exhale it everytime we breath.

On top of that, C02 does NOT cause global warming, it is the result of it, or at least higher concentrations in the atmosphere are the result of global warming.

There is absolutely NO reason to regulate C02 as a pollutant except to rob citizens of their money, stick it to business, and gain massive control over nearly every aspect of life.

I know someone with nearly the same credentials who couldn’t run a business, keep a wife and Family, or even buy a watch on line without messing it up.

I also knew two guys who worked on a production line, invested wisely, held some property and one built up and sold a business. Not much formal education past high school but both just worked for the cheaper benefits and “golf money” as one put it. When the plant started closing down, they weren’t worried in the slightest.

A life in academia doesn’t mean you have smarts.

The EPA should be eliminated because it is unconstitutional.

Pieces of paper with lots of Latin on them = smarts? Since when?

My post was a rebuff to argumentum ad hominem from truthguy

...She's a prima affirmation action baby who doesn't understand science or technology...

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson earned a BS with the highest marks and a Princeton University MS, both in a difficult applied science field, Chemical Engineering.

College Diplomas are not pieces of paper with Latin wording. College Diplomas are parchment (a thin material made from calfskin, sheepskin or goatskin) with Latin wording. Her Diplomas represent success in a very difficult technical course of study. She understands technology but she brings a political agenda to the EPA.

I seem to recall the Anthropomorphic Global Warming crowd attacking reasoned analysis because it was not credentialed through peer review. Attacking the EPA Administrator who is credentialed seems unsupportable. Your cap and trade regulatory objections should be based on reason, technical or political, rather than an attack on her person.

I object to the EPA Carbon Regulation on both technical merit and the political usurping of power.

And lets not forget that those who didn't help get a social conservative into the GOP slot so that wing didn't sit out are EQUALLY at fault.

Let them not weasel out of the result of their behavior.

People with college degrees often believe in incredibly stupid things. True!!

The EPA Administrator has the degrees and is pushing Obama's Cap and Trade agenda. It doesn't make her stupid or ignorant of the science and technology. She is probably more dangerous than having an idiot in the position.

People without college degrees often believe in incredibly stupid things, too. Do people with College Degrees or people without College Degrees believe in more stupid things? lol

Lisa Jackson, another "never had anything but a government job" example of the Peter Principle.

I congratulate Ms. Jackson on her degrees with very high marks in a difficult technical field. That DOES NOT mean she is qualified to run the EPA. Interesting that she became a government bureaucrat instead of working in private industry.

The EPA is one of several government agencies that needs to be abandoned.

I saw a very interesting graph the other day (sorry, no link). It showed that just eight percent of the people working for nobama have any private industry experience. Eight percent was way below other presidents.

Do people with College Degrees or people without College Degrees believe in more stupid things?

William Buckley answered that question several decades ago.

I am obliged to confess I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University.

I know someone with nearly the same credentials...

College Diplomas do not guarantee success in life. Without College people do succeed through luck, inheritance, skill, wit, perseverance, attitude, and so forth.

In the case of the EPA Administrator she has multiple College Degrees and she has succeeded in Life as evidenced by her position.

The EPA Carbon Regulation Policy is wrong politically and technically. She has an agenda.

“da One will veto any such legislation.”

I think with a bunch of Democrats going along with this, and the GOP on board, the Prez will not make a veto stick.

Let him try to veto it.

When he sends it back to the Congress .. we’ll just defeat his veto.
