2DV: I've seen a lot in my time and I have begun to conclude that people like Maher literally say things even they know is screwy just to get headlines and subsequent revenue from a lunatic fringe market. (Ex.: The Rev. Jesse J. & Cousin Al; John Edwards & John Kerry; Big Al Gore!; Obummer... the list is enormous)...It's pretty much free markets at work.
