SALINA — Before a crowd of 6,000 cheering fans, Sarah Palin received rock star treatment Friday night in Salina.

The former vice presidential candidate and former Alaska governor, drew a sell-out crowd to the Bicentennial Center for the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting — an event that routinely draws big names to Salina. Past speakers have included Colin Powell, George H.W. Bush, Bob Costas, Margaret Thatcher and Cal Ripkin Jr.

"We've had great speakers in the past," said Todd Davidson, of the Chamber. "No one has generated this amount of interest — even President George H.W. Bush, who came here when he was a sitting president, did not drive this kind of a response."

Even Palin couldn't ignore the excitement her appearance generated. Back stage, she said, a chamber member told her, " 'Man, this is like a Van Halen concert.' I said, 'Man, I wish.' "

In her speech, Palin sounded off on national security, government bailouts and limited government ideals. And she offered lots of praise for the hometown crowd.

"In a time when folks so fear that much is going wrong, your town is an example of how to get it right and how to soar," said Palin, who was joined in Salina by her daughter, Piper. "Shoot, your state's motto even has it right: to the stars through difficulties."

Palin began by relating her experiences as a city councilwoman and mayor in Wasilla, Alaska. What worked there, she said, was cutting taxes, focusing on a few core services and spending responsibly. As governor, she said she learned to take tough stances.

"I'd have to butt heads with my own party officials and the other party, of course too, and the media," said Palin, who didn't meet with reporters on her trip to Salina. "Some things never change. It wasn't always the easy path, but it was the right path."

Telling the crowd she was going to "call is like I see it," she said Washington, D.C., politicians need to "back off." While Americans have lost jobs and learned to live with less, she charged that government has become more bloated.

"Over the past year, Washington has replaced private irresponsibility with public irresponsibility," she said.

The country, she said, needs health reform "not backroom deals." She suggested measures like allowing insurance purchases across state lines and tort reform.

Also, she said the country needs to pursue "all of the above approach to energy." She said increased drilling for oil must be pursued.

"Drill here and drill now and tap our own plentiful energy supplies," she said.

The Obama administration, she said, has lost its way on foreign policy. She said people wonder if the United States is still a "beacon of hope" for freedom.

"We need a foreign policy that distinguishes America's friends from her enemies and recognizes the true nature of these threats that we are facing," Palin said.

In the end, her speech brought the crowd to its feet.

Earlier in the night, Verlene and Joyce Jackson, of Chapman, said they hope to see Palin as president someday and like that she hasn't "always been in that ivory tower."

"She has a fresh outlook," Verlene Jackson said. "She speaks for us. She's a down home girl. I feel like personally, I think she would do a good job representing us."

DeVee Smalley drove in from Superior, Neb., to join her two daughters for Palin's speech.

"I think she is somebody who is trying to reach out to the heartland of America," Smalley said.

Palin will be back in Kansas May 2 to speak in Wichita at a fundraiser for a Christian school.

Why are you pinging me to your nonsense when I already answered you in a timely manner last night, in my post #87 to you?

I am beginning to think you have ADD or that you're stuck in stupid. As I pointed out in my original post to you, #51 , Sarah has been blasting government bailouts ever since she's been out on her own. She hasn't been John McCain's running mate since the night of November,4, 2008!

Again, wake-up! Get your head out of the past or out of where ever you have it.

Yep. A slap to my mom, a slap to a most beloved and cherished sister-in-law, and confirmation that indeed, FdC apparently believes that children should dominate their parents.

The wonderful advances of our Judeo-Christian Western Civilization -- all of its scientific and technological blessings that have made lives better and richer and more free, all the fantastic inventions and advancements in medicine and agriclture and aviation and computers -- in virtually every aspect of mankind's advance -- would not have happened if the individuals involved had said, "Nope, sorry, no can do -- I have to put my kids first." Kids were raised by nannies and/or put up in English boarding schools for centuries, and during those centuries, England produced many great things, including, ultimately, the USA. With apologies to Dr. Laura, who I mostly love and agree with, the idea of having every family be child-focused in its "business" decisions is a trendy fad that in the long run, hugely threatens the advance of man. Men follow their dreams, and the kids tag along; that's how it needs to work. Except when it comes to the divorce of their parents, kids are tough; I think a big reason my own Baby Boomer generation is so screwed up is because parents forgot that.

Refusing to make "the interests of the children" as defined by pop culture the overriding consideration in career choices and fulfilling worthy dreams is NOT the same as child neglect. Indeed, it could be argued that it IS a form of child abuse, in that when those kids grow up and discover that they aren't the center of the world after all, they move back home with mom and dad because they can't handle that now that they've grown up, they're supposed to be the drones.

Men and women who've accomplished great things to the benefit of humanity didn't do so by putting everything on the back burner until their kids grew up. They brought their kids along for the ride.

The idiot keeps claiming Sarah plagiarizes Rush, and the Rush ghostwrote ‘Going Rogue’, and offers not PROOF other than his dimwitted opinion.

Well, in Alaska, the money was given to the citizens each year. IIRC it was something like $1800/per.

Varies year to year based on 5 year average of oil revenues

The 2008 dividend was $3,269. (included a one time rebate)
The 2009 dividend is $1,305.

CORRECTION of goof in my post #222:

Should read: "Indeed, it could be argued that always making "the children" come before all else IS a form of child abuse, in that when those kids grow up and discover that they aren't the center of the world after all, they move back home with mom and dad because they can't handle that now that they've grown up, they're supposed to be the drones.

No depth and silly enough to let Katie Couric’s colon barbeque her. Kiss up to McLoser and kiss me goodbye

Goodbye. Now go back to the Daily Koz. They've missed you.

LOL. That poster has nothing to say of any interest to me since s/he is insistent to dwell in the past when Sarah was McCain’s running mate. Might as well spit into the wind. Sheesh.

Problem with your stupid theory is that in Congress, men lack balls!!! Only women these days seem to have some. So I choose women. And I am sure their children will be fine. What a stupid theory...so we can’t work or else, right? Sheeshhss

You are correct on all counts - the dominating children are extremely frustrating - I am breaking this down however - the first three year (perhaps seven) need the intimate dance between mother and child - if the mother cares to join. I am only talking about those years! They cannot be replaced - for good or for ill.

I understand the fad you are talking about and I am not a part. In fact, one of my 4 daughters is at boarding school for the precise reasons you brought up (actually she is there for musical theater which was not offered around here) Independence every step of the way!! The formative years starting in infancy are key though — Read “Anxious Parents”

Just remember the development window between mother and child - ages infant to three being most intense.

Is Palin willing to sacrifice her children for the Greater Good?? It cannot happen both ways.

That is why I would like to see a man come forth - perhaps an amazing man of color who is the True Leader.

Wow..again - you don't want women but you are back in the affirmative action s&$#t...you have a problem...something don't go to the top huh? You don't have enough of one disastrous affirmative action president who is killing our country and BTW reinstalling racism all over the country - you want ANOTHER ONE??????????????? You should go live in France. They love people like you there.

And please don't come back. We have serious work to do here. And we need to get our country back with serious people. TRUE AMERICAN PEOPLE, does not matter the color of their skin or THEIR GENDER as long as they have the right quality and the right principles to rebuild America as our founders meant it to be...darn!

I understand the affirmative action - I am a pro lifer who knows that there are real black leaders out there -including MLK’s niece.

This is what I meant by the term a real black leader- perhaps Alan Keyes.

Elected on the merits - I get it.

I never said I don’t want women - I am simply asking why there aren’t the men out there who can do this so the women especially those who are rasing young children can stay home with them?
Why is this topic raising such a nerve?

I am not maligning the women (or face slapping) I am asking where are the men??

You state an opinion as fact -- I think it's ridiculous to accuse Palin of "sacrificing her children."

Here's another thought, and it's why I see God's hand in this. At this particular place in time, in this particular society and culture, where the Oprahs, Dianne Sawyers, Babwa Wawas, AAAAAAaaaaaaaandrea MITCHuls and Perky Katie Courics can (and do) disarm any male Republican by virtue of unspoken rules that dictate gentlemanly behavior, Palin is not onlyl immune, she's got claws as sharp as the Mean Girls.

A woman asks a man an impertinent catty question or presumes to chides a man, as Couric did to HW Bush, and a gentleman must be tongue-tied to be polite. A woman asks another woman an impertinent catty question or chides her ... break out the popcorn.

I'm not saying Palin is perfect. I'm saying I think she is God-sent.

Doest I hear a tinge of the cat in thee? "Mrow!Hssssst! Meow! Look at her own children -- harrrrrrumphhhhhhh! See! Now, MY children are all perfect because of ME."

Have you had your saucer of milk today?
