Cross Placed at Air Force Pagan Circle Deemed 'Destructive'

A large wooden cross was placed at an Air Force Academy worship area for pagans and other Earth-centered religions, prompting an investigation by academy officials, though some caution that it’s hardly “destructive behavior.”

Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said an Air Force Academy staffer spotted the cross — erected with railroad ties — lying against a rock at a worship area for pagan groups at the academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Jan. 17.

melkor: “i hate to tell you.. but 95% of christanity is taken from paganism and adopted as to not “upset the locals””

It’s pretty obvious you haven’t studied Christianity much. You can’t even spell it correctly. 95% of so-called Christian holidays may or may not have their roots in pagan holidays. A holiday, however, is not the same as a religion. Why not spend some time studying the Bible (with the intent to understand it not just refute it), then get back to us, OK?

How would General George Washington handle this?

He would gladly take the help from the pagan soldier who was willing to fight and die for creation of something as wonderful as America.

“When trying to arrange for workmen in 1784 at Mount Vernon, Washington made clear that he would accept “Mohometans, Jews or Christians of any Sect, or they may be Atheists.” Washington wrote Lafayette in 1787, “Being no bigot myself, I am disposed to indulge the professors of Christianity in the church that road to heaven which to them shall seem the most direct, plainest, easiest and least liable to exception.”

To everyone thinking that all pagans are witches....

Pagan is a “catchall” catagory for everyone with a relegion that is not based on the sons of Abraham.

Nothing in your argument negates my Christianity nor my assurance of salvation. If my fate is to spend eternity in hell, it will not be because I have a Christmas tree in my living room on December 25th, it will be because I rejected Jesus as my savior.

To get back to the question.

How would General George Washington handle this, (once he found out that such a thing existed in his camp)?

Does westboro baptist church represent all Christians?

Would you be upset if someone said that because Fred Phelps says god hates America because god hates fags, therefore ALL Christians must hate america?

As someone said earlier, what if someone went to a church, took down the cross, tossed it in the grass, and raised a Muslim crescent? As long as you disassembled the cross and didnt cut it down with a chainsaw it would be “non destructive” just like mentioned in the article.

Next time a church is burned down, lets tell the arson squad “Ya know.. christ.. he wants this forgiven.. lets close the case and move on”

ok, fair enough....

but then you can not get upset about the “war on christmas”, people saying “happy holidays” or “Merry X-Mas”. You cant get upset that someone took down the nativity scene in a town square. You cant get mad when santa is not allowed to visit kids in school. Etc... etc..

I already replied..

He would gladly accept them into his army and into his country. He would even give them a Chaplin to match their faith.

When trying to arrange for workmen in 1784 at Mount Vernon, Washington made clear that he would accept “Mohometans, Jews or Christians of any Sect, or they may be Atheists.” Washington wrote Lafayette in 1787, “Being no bigot myself, I am disposed to indulge the professors of Christianity in the church that road to heaven which to them shall seem the most direct, plainest, easiest and least liable to exception.

He was aware that religious beliefs were a fundamental part of the lives of his peers and of his soldiers. He knew that a moral basis for the American Revolution and the creation of a new society would motivate Americans to support his initiatives - and he knew that he would receive more support if he avoided discriminating against specific religious beliefs.

In the Revolutionary War, Washington supported troops selecting their own chaplains (such as the Universalist John Murray) while trying to avoid the development of factions within the army. Religion offered him moral leverage to instill discipline, reduce theft, deter desertion, and minimize other rambunctious behaviors that upset local residents. It was logical for Washington to invoke the name of the Divine, but it may have been motivated more by a desire for improving life on earth rather than dealing with life after death.

I can get upset about anything I want to, logical or not, it still would have nothing to do with my salvation.

but why would you get upset?

You have faith in Jesus as your savior. You know he died for your sins and that it has granted you an eternal life in heaven with him.

How does saying “happy holidays” vs “Merry christmas” change the above fact accepted by you?

You got it backwards, but then you are taking the pagan perspective.

No he wouldn't, and that is why he only mentioned the three main religions and atheists. I think that his men would have lynched the Pagans and that Washington would have merely discharged them, or perhaps treated them like he did homosexuals.

You beleave a god lives in the heavens, I think that *several* gods live in the heavens.

Then which one(s) made the universe? Major gods? Lesser gods? That would seem at odds though with the symmetry of the earliest thousandths of a second. Did these gods pre-exist its breaking? Which one(s) decided? Was there conflict? Multiple dieties seem pretty confusing.

One God is a better model.

straw death?

Straw burns ferociously. Think about it.

Have you stidied the Church’s beliefs on Heaven, Hell and Purgatory?

What church do you attned?

The Air Force Academy has a long tradition of religious intolerance, this isn’t surprising. Find the pricks that did it and give them the heave-ho (Navy term).

“if you want to be a good christian “

As a pagan, do you really feel qualified to instruct someone on how to be a Christian? You make sweeping generalizations about what Christians believe. I can tell you, they don’t all believe the same things.

one god is an *easier* model.. not necessarily a better one.

To answer your questions about *MY* particular faith (not all paganism)

Allfather created the universe. Whatever he willed came to pass.

In the center of space at the start of time he created a great abyss called Gunnunga-gap, the yawning gulf, an abyss of perpetual twilight. North of this he created Nifl-heim, the home of darkness. In the center was an exchaustless spring called Hvergelmir. South of this chasm was Muspells-heim, the home of elemental fire. In there was a fire giant named Surtr. He brandished a great sword that sent spawks which fell into Hevrgelmir and created steam.

As the steam rose in clouds it again encountered the prevailing cold and was changed into hoarfrost (like permafrost ice crystals) The continual action of cold and heat combined with the will of the allfather and the hoarfrost came to life as Ymir, a Hrim-Thurs or ice giant.

groping about in the gloom in search of something to eat, ymir perceived a gigantic cow called audhumla the nurisher, which had been created from the same materials as himself. From this cow flowed four great streams of milk that supplied all his nourishment. All his wants were satisfied, but the cow began looking for food and began to lick the salt off an ice block with her rough tongue. She continued to do so until first the hair of a god appeared and then the whole head emerged from its icy envelope, until by and by Buri the producer stepped forth free.

While the cow had been engaged, Ymir the giant fell asleap and a son and daughter were born from his sweat from his armpit and from his feet produced the six headed giant thrudgelmir who shortly after his birth, brought forth Bergelmir, whom all the evil frost giants are descended.

When these giants became aware of the existance of Buri and his son Borr they began waging war against the for as the gods and giants represented the opposite forces of good and evil there was no hope for them living in peace. The struggle continued for ages until borr married the giantess bestla daughter of bolthorn who bore them three sons. Odin, Vili and Ve. The three sons joined with the gods and slew Ymir.

As he sank down lifeless his blood gushed from his wounds in such floods that it produced a great deluge, in which all his race perished, with the exception of Bergelmir, whom excaped in a boat. He took up an abode in a land called jotunhim and here he begat a new race of frost giants. The gods, having triumphed over their foes began to look about them with intent to improve the world. After consideration Borr’s sons rolled tmir’s corpse into the yawning abss to create the world out of his parts.

Out of his flesh they fashioned midgard (earth). This was placed in the xact centre of the space and hedged all around with ymir’s eyebrows for ramparts. The solid portion of midgard was surrounded by the giants blood and sweat which created the ocean and his bones made the hills and his teeth the cliffs. His hair the trees and all vegetation. From his brains became the clouds.
