Retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell, who opposed allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces when he was the nation's top military officer, said Wednesday he supports efforts to lift the ban on their service.
"Attitudes and circumstances have changed" in the 17 years since Congress, with strong military backing, mandated the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, Powell said in a statement issued by his office. Noting that he has said for the past two years that Congress should review the legislation, Powell said he "fully supports the approach" outlined in testimony Tuesday by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee that it was his "personal belief" that lifting the ban was the "right thing to do." Gates said the Pentagon was preparing for its repeal, despite significant opposition from senior Republican, and some Democratic, lawmakers.

I talked to a friend of mine “in the know” about Colin Powell.
Basically, he and the Missus got tired of being ostracized from the DC socialite circles and he’s doing everything he can to make up for any conservative “stances” he took previously so as to get back into the social scene.
That would make him two things:
1. A traitor.
2. A pu—y..............................
Powell is a cowardly idiot who is an affirmative action POS. He cares more about the liberal agenda than the safety of our troops.
He’s just trying to get Cindy and Megan McPain to say something nice about him since John is balking on this.
Blood will be on his hands when “Bruce” gets the beat down in the barracks with a padlock in a sock.

He cares more about his wife getting off his ass for causing her to be excluded from the DC “black” social circles.
I never had high hopes for him. That was the JFK theme song at one time. I knew GHWB put him there to show Bush family “tolerance.”
