There are some stories that make you cover your eyes with your hand and groan. And this column by Susan Estrich about what she thinks is the poorly named Apple iPad is definitely one of those. Here is Estrich putting on her feminist cap and making a very long stretch on blaming the name "iPad" on a "lack of diversity" at Apple:
Is there a woman in America who did not laugh, or at least roll her eyes, the minute she heard that the newest, hottest tablet computer from one of America's most ingenuous companies was going to sound like a feminine hygiene product? The iKotex is what most people I know are calling it, with apologies to Kotex.
So where were those women? The short answer is that, plainly, they were not in the room. Go to Apple's home page and look at the pictures and bios of key executives. I'll tell you who you'll find: Steve, Timothy, Scott, Jonathan, Ron, Bob, Peter, Mark, Philip, Bertrand and Bruce. All white, all men. If there is a "top" woman at Apple, at best she's No. 12.

Kotex is what you think of when you hear the name, but one thing’s for certain, you don’t forget it!

Funny about this... When my kid got an Ipod, she was.... different, not all there.. distracted. I thought of the pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
And yet they are running a $50B sales company and turning a decent profit, innovating new products, even creating new markets that didn't exist before... maybe we need MORE white men !?!?
When I was trying to read the initial reports on FR, there were a bunch of posts joking about the name and a bunch of graphics made. This was a half hour after the product was introduced. There were also quite a few graphics that had Kotex products with Apple logos.
I hadn't made the connection, either, but the frequency of posts and the professionalism of some of the graphics, and the fact they appeared almost immediately made me suspicious that maybe there was an organized campaign that had been focus grouped to go after the device.
Interesting.

No. Kotex to me always brings to mind tampons. iPad simply brought to mind another over priced Apple product.
