Palin's got Ohio on her mind

Sarah Palin’s political action committee has been selective and strategic in its donations to candidates over the past six months, but if money is any indication of where her heart lies, her political loyalties can be traced to Ohio.

While SarahPAC has devoted just 5 percent of its total expenditures over that period to fellow GOP colleagues, four of the 17 candidates Palin contributed to hail from Ohio — the state where she held by far the most presidential campaign events in 2008, according to The Washington Post’s candidate tracker.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee gave $5,000 to former GOP Rep. John Kasich, who’s running for Ohio governor; $3,500 to former Rep. Rob Portman, who’s running for the state’s open Senate seat; $1,000 to Rep. Jean Schmidt; and $1,000 to state auditor Mary Taylor, whom Kasich recently tapped to be his running mate.

A GOP source familiar with Palin’s thinking said most of these candidates solicited Palin’s support. “She feels there is a real chance to turn the tide in Ohio,” said the source.

Living in Ohio I have come to understand that the saying "as Ohio goes, so goes the country" may actually be backwards. It should be, "as the country goes, so goes Ohio". It is a critical battleground state to be sure but she needs to be looking like a winner before she comes here looking for EVs. Strickland may be battered from this economy but he isn't exactly unpopular and he isn't blamed for it. The same holds true for the Democratic party especially in the cities.

I can appreciate that she wants to visit the high population centers but these are exactly the places that she very probably won't win. A better strategy might be to visit the rural districts and make a strong effort to strengthen her brand name there. These are her people. These are the Christian, right wing, pro-life, conservative types that she needs to connect with, that she needs to convince that she isn't just a pretty face. She has a chance here but it isn't a given that she will win here by any means. These are hard times in Ohio and there's a lot of hard choices in store for Ohioans. Ohio isn't in the mood for BS.

Lakewood, that’s around Cleveland. She lost Cuyahoga county buy about 260,000 votes in 2008 - 69% Obama/Biden to 30% McCain/Palin. She won’t do much better in 2012. She needs to pick her battles here very wisely.

The key areas are the swing districts, which are usually the suburban areas just outside the metro areas.

By hitting Metro areas you get the most media play into the burbs and exurbs.

What are you talking about, the article said that she gave money to Ohio conservative politicians, nothing about her visiting high populated areas.....

She may be building some political capital with potential politicians winning and getting their support if she runs in 2012, but there is no mention by Politico or people familiar with her thinking said anything of the sort.

Obama and Ted Strickland have done a masterful job of helping Ohioans forget what a disaster Square Bob Sponge Tax Taft was a a GOP governor. Kasich wins the Governor’s Mansion and Portman takes over Rinovich’s senate seat. Sarah rightly sees Ohio conservatives on the rise and she equally understands the significance of Ohio in 2012. It would not surprise me at all to see either kasich or Portman tabbed to be the Veep candidate by the `12 nominee.

Wow, you are a classic "concern troll" you have never posted anything in favor of Palin, I did not see a single pro Palin post in your entire history, but there was a lot of the "concern troll" postings about her, just exactly like that one.

On the other hand you seem to be a Romneybot, playing the reverse part of "concern troll" by always just slightly bumping him in spite of his 'imperfections'.

You were against Palin before she was even chosen (June 2008) and you never changed, the "concern troll" style is shallow.

Thank-you SarahPac! Yes I feel it this year. Everyone here is upset over what has happened to us.We are speaking out loudly and often about what the left and the dems have done to us. No more Mr Nice guy around here.A year ago people used to tell us we didn’t know what we were talking about, now most of them are listening and agreeing the ones that don’t scurry away quickly without even a word.I seriously doubt if there is more than 20% turnout for Dems in 2010 they are so demoralized.

I saw a lot of Palin, er, McCain signs in Lakewood back then. It’s still got a good number of Pubs on the north part and is close to Rocky River, which has even more. Good to wade in close to Cleveland just to let them know she’s nearby.

to be honest i dont like Romney at all and would prefer a Governor like McConnell in VA. Not that you asked but if you look at some of my other posts (apparently you have a lot of time on your hands and are obsessed with me) i have noted that i would like the nomination to go to someone that isnt exactly on the national radar. As i recall most of the time when i spouted off factoids about either Romney or Palin it was in reference to an article that either referenced them specifically or about potential 2012 nominees based on those who have also ran.

I initally loved her as the VP pick. it was tactically ingenious and really threw the Dems for a loop. However the media assault on her took a toll of which i think would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to overcome

i really think Palin is going to be damaged goods despite my fondness for her. she is going to be labeled as a quitter that could not cut it and i think that the squishy middle of AMerican politics will believe it.
if anyone can derail either Romney or Huckabee it will probably be some under the radar governor thats just my take who knows what will happen

there are some parallels between the Reagan campaign and Romney (before anyone flips out i am comparing the campaigns not the people nor their conservative bonafides). Romney ran a pretty strong second last time around as Reagan did in 76. Not as strong as Reagan mind you but a good run.
Romeny is keeping his team intact. they meet quarterly if not monthly and he keeps his PACs going as well. the infrastructure is still there. He campaigns for GOPers.
He has deep pockets and connections to other deep pockets. Do i hope he will be the nominee? heck no i am just saying that he is well positioned for another run and has a decent shot at the nomination. especially if there are a ton of people vying for the nomination kind of like how McCain pulled it off this time around

I really do think Palin is damaged goods for the squishy middle unless Obama’s numbers get so bad it wont matter who the GOP nominates. she is going to be under a relentless assault as someone who did not even finish her term as Governor as well as all the other points i just made.
the post regarding Romney i believe was responding to a post about how the GOP nomination typically goes to someone who ran before like Reagan, Dole, Bush Sr, McCain and Nixon.
so yes indeed i do call them as i see them. You dont want to believe my sincerity thats fine, just get over your self-righteousness and relax.
