Deficit of Trust: Most Voters Don’t Believe President’s Assertions About Economy
Rasmussen Reports ^ | January 30, 2010 | by Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 01/30/2010 8:11:12 AM PST by MaestroLC

Highlights:

*The president in the speech declared that his administration has cut taxes for 95% of Americans. He even chided Republicans for not applauding on that point. However, just 21% of voters nationwide believe that taxes have been cut for 95% of Americans. Most (53%) say it has not happened, and 26% are not sure. Other polling shows that nearly half the nation’s voters expect their own taxes to go up during the Obama years.

*The president also asserted that “after two years of recession, the economy is growing again.” Just 35% of voters believe that statement is true, while 50% say it is false.

*Obama claimed that steps taken by his team are responsible for putting two million people to work “who would otherwise be unemployed.” Just 27% of voters say that statement is true. Fifty-one percent (51%) say it's false.

*On all the points raised in the president’s speech, there is a huge partisan divide. On the question of cutting taxes for 95% of Americans, hardly any Republicans or unaffiliated voters believe it's true. However, Democrats are evenly divided: 34% say the tax cuts have been delivered, 29% say they haven’t, and 38% are not sure.

*Sixty-three percent (63%) of Democrats agree with the president’s statement that the economy is growing again. Seventy percent (70%) of Republicans and 60% of unaffiliated voters disagree.

*As for the claim about two million jobs, 46% of Democrats say it’s true, while 77% of Republicans say it’s not. As for those not affiliated with either major party, 24% say it’s true, and 59% say it’s false.

*Regarding another initiative detailed in the speech on Wednesday night, just nine percent (9%) of voters believe the president’s proposed freeze on discretionary spending will have a big impact on the deficit.

" for those who are making under $ 250,00 a year, your taxes won't go up one cent "

Then it changed to: for those who are making under $ 200,000 a year,
Then it changed to : for those who are making under $ 150,000 a year....

Ohh yeah ? where is that promise that seniors who are making under $ 50,000 won't ever have to worry about Federal Income tax ?

My point exactly. Thank you for noticing. YOu either have passion or you don’t. Impulse is good, but doesn’t make a leader if it’s a “one and done” type of thing.

What the hell happened to Joe Wilson??

In Congress when you're right once, 'You quit while you're ahead'!!!! It happens so seldom, you have to take advantage! If he's not heard from 'til Nov, he's got half a chance to get re-elected simply by being the leading edge 'The emperor has no clothes' guru!

Judging from the poll results, looks like Justice Alito accurately summarized Obama’s entire speech — “not true”.

Probably Haiti related.

No that would have been clintonbushhate.org! Jeb and papa will have 'nice' things to say to the child president. (oh, and yes I know how to spell haiti)

No, no. I did not say he was at plus five.

I thought Rasmussen had him at -19 earlier.

It was a joke on top of your joke and anyway, his numbers are going lower than a dry well by summer.

Especially if he continue to give people the bird and have lame speeches such as the SOTU where he calls out people directly, in public and on TV for all to see.

I mean who does that and sincerely believes they are going find consensus or negotiation from the opposition?

Then he goes to the Republicans and comes with convoluted statements saying they are not going to get what they want.

What? You are the one moving an agenda, to which we are opposed and for you to continue to lie and say we have proposed no other choices is just amazing.

You... Cannot get your proposal passed because the American people do not want your “gift”.

If your idea was so good you could have passed almost anything when you had a filibuster proof gang and yet you didn't and couldn't. Why?

The republicans didn't have anything to do with your inability to pass your agenda. You and your then 60 Senators could have done whatever what they wanted and you failed your own goals. The Republicans before last Tuesday were essentially persona non grata and irrelevant but you couldn't move your agenda forward.

What happened before Tuesday that prevented you from passing any number of things you wanted?

What has changed that makes you believe you are “now” going to get bi-partisan support on something you clearly didn't need before?

LOL ! thats probably because you think Bush is a conservative and some sort of great guy.

personally, I think he is the same as Obama , just slightly better for america , but still a stinking rat backstabbing politician like the rest of the GOP who put McCain up there last time.

the republican party is just socialist light, rape us with a kiss , the dems are just full speed ahead rape, pillage and beat us all into the ground

I don’t believe the figure of 5.7% growth in GDP that all the networks are spouting about.

You shouldn't

"The 5.7 percent increase in gross domestic product, which exceeded the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, marked the best performance since the third quarter of 2003, figures from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. Efforts to rebuild depleted inventories contributed 3.4 percentage points to GDP, the most in two decades. The problem with this calculation is that government spending is included in the calculations and government employees are counted twice! This skews the numbers, especially in a quarter that saw government intervention in the markets and an expansion of government jobs (at the expense of private employers).

So you say George H. W. Bush, 41st President, 85 years old, and his son Jeb were at the White House snorting coke with Obama, I say it was a dumb thing to say, and you say that it's because I think Bush (I assume you mean Bush 43 - different guy, btw) is a conservative.

Yeah........that makes perfect sense.

You're both mentally and morally confused and what you said was one of the dumbest things I've ever read on FR.

But I'm glad you can at least laugh at yourself. Those of us who are in our right minds certainly are laughing at you.....

I “left that other site” because the administrator said I was being disrespectful to the Office of the Presidency. LOL.

That’s when I joined FR.

I LOVE it here!

So who is right, Rasmussen or CBS? Maybe it depends on how you ask the questions.

CBS Poll: 83% of Speech Watchers Approve of Obama's State of the Union Proposals

CBS asked if they approve them. But Rass asked if they believe them. I am guessing the wave is against Obama. He was not believable.

Rass also said O got a bump in the polls, but only democrats because he went after republicans and mainly, the SCOTUS. I could see this at MSNBC and the lib websites. The attack method always rallies the base, like Cheney going after O.
