Roeder trial: Abortion-rights group calls for tougher federal probe

Randall Terry in Washington, 1-22-10

WICHITA — Abortion rights-advocates today called for federal authorities to step up their investigation into a possible conspiracy of anti-abortion violence, citing Scott Roeder’s murder trial as a key reason.

“The Department of Justice needs to vigorously pursue not only a further investigation of Scott Roeder but of his connections to the extremist network that may have been involved in the furthering of this murder,” said Kathy Spillar, executive vice president of the Feminist Majority Foundation.

“Many of this extremist network with whom Scott Roeder clearly has been involved are here in the courtroom. We can only hope that the network will be dismantled, and until it’s dismantled, we’re waiting for the next murder.”

Spillar was referring to several anti-abortion militants and supporters of Roeder who are attending his trial. Roeder, 51, of Kansas City, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller, who was shot May 31 while ushering in his church. Roeder also faces two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly threatening two other ushers who chased him as he fled.

Roeder has admitted to reporters and in a court filing that he killed Tiller, saying it was necessary to save unborn babies, but he has pled not guilty.

“We are not coming to condone or condemn Scott Roeder’s actions ...”

“That decision will soon rest with the jury. However, there are those who want to pretend this trial has nothing to do with child-killing by abortion; that is a farce. It’s like saying that the trials of Nat Turner and John Brown had nothing to do with slavery ...” --Randall Terry, from the article.

There was a homicide clearly and this guy admits he was the one who killed Tiller. I believe that the question of whether there was a “murder” is a matter to be decided by the courts. Now, these pro-abort folks would like to get maximum use of this homicide in the furtherance of their cause by “broad-stroking” not only all who oppose the practice, but also by using the word “murder” which has yet to be adjudicated.

From the article. “It was wrong, because by killing Tiller, Roeder left the path of life and lowered himself to their level. And by lowering himself to their level, Roeder became the enemy.”
I disagree with that statement. Tiller was as much a murderer as any nazi or communist. Was it wrong to fight and kill nazis or communists? Are all of our combat veterans “the enemy”?

Did you know that hundreds of thousands of Americans came out to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., last Friday? They were peaceful, and the march received almost no attention whatsoever from our ignorant media (it never does), except for EWTN, although these types of protests are effective methods in eliminating abortion, because word still does get out via the Web and otherwise, helping to educate abortion-bound women and pro-abort politicians.

If God wanted Tiller dead, He could easily have struck him down with lightning, an errant car, a terminal illness, etc. But He wanted him alive, in my mind, so he could repent, and save his ruddy soul. Scott Roeder most likely denied him that opportunity. Have you ever noticed how many old wicked people still meander about the earth? Our God is giving them ample time to convert; shouldn't we try to imitate His ways (but definitely still protest within the law!)?

I agree, this is a matter to be decided by the courts, in regard to Scott Roeder. And did you notice how silent the media fell when pro-lifer, Jim Pouillon, was shot and killed by someone who didn't like the posters he held?

Maybe God used Roeder.

Yes, I do recall that killing, but don’t remember whether an arrest was made? Roeder is presenting a defense against the murder charge, but apparently willing to concede to manslaughter. Some have argued that he shouldn’t have even been allowed by the court to do that. Years back, when the guy shot the abortionist on his way into the actual “clinic”, he wanted to present a defense of having acted in defense of human life which the “doctor” was on his way to kill. The court wouldn’t allow that defense. I don’t know whether that defense would have worked for him, but he should have been allowed to make it in my opinion.

[Scotsman] Maybe God used Roeder.

[mlizzy] Why did I *KNOW* you'd say that? However, would Christ want Roeder to live in jail for his crime, then? I don't miss Tiller, but I wish he would have exited this earth on different terms, and ultimately a changed man, one who realized his deadly sins. Did you read about the abortion doctor who had a dream and ALL the children he ever aborted were in the dream? When he was told the reason the kids were running away from him (in his dream) was because he was the man responsible for their deaths through abortion, he soon repented and never did another abortion. I'll try to find the link on that, if you haven't read about it. Seems there was a saint in the dream too. It's a good story.

March for Life, Washington, D.C., 1-22-10 The reason you don't remember if there was an arrest in the Jim Pouillon killing or not, is probably because the whole story was handled as a non-story. Very sad. And I *do* recall the case you are speaking of.

We had an old family friend who just passed away, but after his daughter received an abortion decades ago, he fell into a very deep depression, lost his job, his wife, and his good nature too. I cannot defend what Roeder did, but I do feel sorry for him, because I've seen what abortion did to our friend (tore him to pieces, just like the baby), and maybe that happened to Roeder too. Add being obsessive and handling painful situations with violence, and there's a troublesome situation indeed. There are no fruits from abortion. With lots of prayer (fasting, too, and legal protesting!), abortion will vanish from this earth. If Christ didn't think that was true, wouldn't He have blown us to smithereens by now?

I have not edited this video yet, so it "bounces" around and goes "sideways," but the music is nice and it's a good portrayal of how young people today are fighting "for life." My daughter said this group of kids participated in the march proper at Washington last Friday, dancing and singing (in different languages) a message "for life" around a portrait of Jesus. Gotta love these young folks!

“It’s a good story.”
Sounds like it.
I see no one wishes to answer my question in post 6. Are soldiers and policemen condemned by the “all life is valuable” crowd when they kill someone who needs killing?
“However, would Christ want Roeder to live in jail for his crime, then?”
Probably. Render unto Ceasar, etc. Paul in Romans 13 splains it some more.

Soldiers and policemen are acting in self-defense or to protect people from harm, but, of course, abortion is legal in the United States, so the deadly harm towards the infant is trumped by the mother's desire to end its life. Here's a quote from Fr. Euteneuer (bear in mind that Fr. is one of only 12 official Catholic Church exorcists in America; he well knows evil):

"We are reminded that even supposed political victories are temporary, and that the solution to these problems is not political, even if we have to keep up the political fight and our activist efforts," said Father Euteneuer. "We are called to prayer, fasting and conversion... only God can put a stop to the horror of abortion now."
