Poll: Pence Leads Bayh (Bye Bye Bayh)

A Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday shows GOP Rep. Mike Pence with a slight advantage over Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, who is up for re-election in 2010. The survey reports Pence has a 3-point lead over Bayh, 47 percent to 44 percent, within the poll’s margin of error. Seven percent are undecided, while 3 percent said they’d back another candidate.

Pence, who met with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn on Thursday, said Friday he would take the weekend to talk with his wife about a potential challenge.

I read a web site with a survey of ALL Senate seats by 5 polling firms (Cook, Sabato and a few others).

Evan Bayh was supposed to be the safest Dem seat in the Senate for 2010 (this year) election. Supposedly he was the safest. Safer than Boxer, Murray, Gillibrand and all Dems.

My only hesitation is that we don’t want to lose Pence in the House. But if he wants to move up, more power to him. It’s his decision, and he’s earned it.

Let’s just hope we can find a good replacement for his house seat.

At the very least, the new candidate would most likely still be a conservative. Cook PVI for his district is R+10, so no numerical disadvantage in the house for Pubbies.

What about your governor? Is he any good? He was on Bill Bennett today but I couldn’t listen. Would he be a good replacement for Bayh or Pence?

State Dem chairman questions results

A new survey by polling firm Rasmussen Reports shows Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh trailing a possible Republican challenger.

The firm surveyed 800 likely Indiana voters Thursday and Sunday and found Bayh, D-Ind., attracted 44 percent of the vote, compared to 47 percent for U.S. Rep. Mike Pence, a Republican from Columbus.

Pence reportedly is considering a run against Bayh.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker questioned the survey and said Bayh is well positioned to campaign as the incumbent.

“This poll deviates tremendously from other public polling that has been done recently in the state of Indiana,” Parker said Monday.

Rasmussen polled Hoosiers during an Indianapolis Colts playoff game Sunday, Parker said.

“Most people were focused on a football game,” Parker said. “To say that is a sample of the electorate is laughable.”

Parker said Bayh “doesn’t focus on these types of polls. He has the resources to run a very aggressive campaign to get out his message about how independent he has been in representing the people of Indiana.”

Bayh has $13 million in his campaign treasury, Parker said.

In another Rasmussen matchup, former U.S. Rep. John Hostettler, an Evansville Republican who has indicated he will challenge Bayh, attracted 41 percent of the vote, compared to 44 percent for Bayh.

Still, “any incumbent who attracts less than 50 percent at this point in a campaign is considered potentially vulnerable,” Rasmussen said in a news release.

Indiana GOP Chairman Murray Clark said the survey results are “just more proof that Hoosiers are rightfully frustrated with Evan Bayh’s constant support of a liberal agenda in Washington that is at odds with his rhetoric back home.”

Republican Scott Brown’s victory last week in once reliably Democratic Massachusetts has Republicans more hopeful about midterm elections.
