Could David Obey be Coakley'd?

Could Obey Be Coakley’d? Welcome to a new, real political world.

By Kathryn Jean Lopez

Goliath has been known to win, or he wouldn’t be Goliath. But he didn’t win this time. And that could significantly affect what happens in November.

Scott Brown’s victory in the Massachusetts special election for the seat formerly considered by too many to be Ted Kennedy’s seat, is many varieties of good news. It’s especially good news for the Davids around the country who have their sights set on Washington. The “Yes, He Can” line emblazoned across the photo of Marco Rubio on NR’s cover a few months ago has just gotten a big momentum boost.

Among the beneficiaries of this invigorated sense that no seat belongs to an individual or his party, regardless of rank, tenure, or his family’s place in the American imagination, is Sean Duffy, a Republican running for Congress in Wisconsin. This 38-year-old father of five, currently serving his fourth term as Ashland County district attorney, is effectively reminding Democrat David Obey, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee (who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1969, before Duffy was born), that his congressional seat is not his, but the people’s. This former reality-TV star — Duffy and his wife, Rachel, were both cast members of The Real World — may benefit from the new real political world created by the election of Scott Brown.

Duffy talked with National Review Online about the Brown win.

A win by Duffy would be awesome. IMHO, Patrick Kennedy could also be defeated if everything breaks our way.

I am married into a Hispanic family (my wife, Rachel, is of Mexican-American descent), and among her family, it’s commonly accepted that the Kennedy/Obama/Obey idea of social justice has been an abject failure. Minorities and the economically disadvantaged desire economic opportunity, not handouts. The challenge for conservatives is to boldly and proudly present our philosophy of personal responsibility and economic empowerment to minorities and remind voters of the Democrats’ miserable record on these issues.

And the truth shall set you free.

That is interesting, because I think as a Republican I have been taught that most minorities feel only Democrats care about them, when I believe the opposite is true. Conservatives feel EVERYONE has a right and an obligation to fulfill their own dreams and should be given a chance. Conversely, any liberals I know believe most minorities can’t do so, so “they” (meaning the Dems mostly) need to do things for them. I will “speak boldly” from now on. Thank you.

Let's hope Duffy beats Obey. Check out his web site and send him a few dollars to help out!

Without daddy around Patches is probably very vulnerable but isn’t the former mayor Buddy Cianci planning to run against him? Even a disgraced felon is better than the idiot son of the drunkard.

obey has been in DC too long. he only goes back to wisconsin briefly. his residence is in Virginia. Feingold or foolsgold as he is called by some needs to go. Driving through obey districts there are signs already that say remove obey. i love it. hopefully in Michigan’S UP we can get rid of Bart ‘Stupid’ Stupak

We know that we can knock Kagen out of the 8th district. We can also try for Tammy Bauldwin’s seat.

Feingold does not yet have a credible challenger. The folks up against him act like they’re running for local boy scout troupe leader, not elected office. T-shirt sales and meandering public appearances.

Obey could go — his district has gone forcefully anti-Obama after voting for him a year ago. A ton of folks, traditionally conservative, feel duped by the big O. Tag Obey with the Obama baggage and he’s gone. Kagan in the fox valley is already dead man walking.

To emphasize this point in a campaign, it must be flat-out stated! Do not expect the people to make the connection here - show them!

That is really the only way the point can be successfully exploited!

Baldwin’s seat is the longest of longshots, but if ex-Congressman Scott Klug can be convinced to run we might be able to pull it off.

Other than Obey and Kasten, our best bet at a House takeover in WI is Kind’s WI-03.
