MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- An Aboriginal-themed routine by two Russian ice dancers has stirred up a pre-Olympic controversy, with some indigenous Australians blasting the "rip off" of their culture and Canadian native leaders worrying about the insensitivity of the skaters.
World champions Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin are doing an Aboriginal routine for their original dance -- complete with brown-toned costumes adorned with leaves and white Aboriginal-style markings. Their music includes a didgeridoo riff.
In the original dance, couples can create any kind of dance that falls within an assigned theme. This year's theme is country/folk, and skaters are doing routines to everything from Indian music to country western to Moldovian folk songs.

copying used to be the highest form of flattery.
Must be nice up north. They have someone to protect them without spending a dime and they have plenty of time to worry about trifles.
We all had a few laughs over the Gingerbread Man on ice. See http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2435888/posts
But it would be okay for them to use a country song, even though they’re not rednecks, or a Moldovan folk song, even though they’re not Moldovan?
Absurd. Someone tell the Aborigines, and the Canadians, to get over it. Folk music is in the public domain, legally and morally.
Somebody is trying to “make up” news with this one. The ice dancers were beautiful ... to make ANYTHING out of this is rediculous. I suppose the Tooth Fairy is going to be T’eed off next when some gal’s TuTu doesn’t have ruffles in the right place. Geez ... on to real news!
Is anyone else as sick of hearing about various groups being "offended" as I? Everyday, we are pounded with this group or that group being "offended". Some of the groups are down rite freaks and have the audacity to wonder why people ridicule or mock them. You know the type: A 6' queen "trapped" in a man's body and slips his pink platforms on, drapes himself with feathers, and tromps up and down in some stupid parade and then.....is 'offended' at the response. Or Native Americans being 'offended' at sports teams names that imply anything Native American...'OFFENSIVE'...and on and on. And now....the aborigines are 'offended' at dancers who dressed in their style of apparel....The earth is off it's axis.... /rant off
Well ranted ... errr ... said.
lol ty.
Maybe to be true to aboriginal behavior the skaters should have burned down the ice rink when they left.
Add a little
“My bomerang won’t come back!
My bomerang won’t come back!
I’ve wagged the thing all over the place,
Praticed till I was blue in the face,
I’m a big disgrace to the aborigone race,
My bomerang won’t come back!”
And some ..
Tan me hide when I’m dead Fred,
Tan me hide when I’m dead!”
“So we tanned his hide when he died Clyde,
And that’s it hanging on the shed in memorium!”
“Tie me Kangeroo down sport,
Tie me kangeroo down!
Just call it “Obama on Ice”!
” some gals TuTu “
You’re referring to two TuTus too?
My Mother and Sister would seize the TV when that ice skating stuff came on. I hated it!
Rule Two, no member of the faculty is to maltreat the Abbos in any way whatsoever -- if there's anybody watching.People were watching so you can't maltreat them.
Rules 1, 3, 5 and 7 are far more famous: No Pooftah!
I’ll bet not one aborigine is aware of this kerfuffle
“Rule Two: No member of the faculty is to maltreat the Abos in any way whatsoeverif there’s anyone watching.”
They have their college-educated political agitators, like all the other Approved Victims.
I suggest that they do a ‘blackface’ routine next year and go for a ‘twofer’. Gotta keep that cottage industry of ‘being offended’ rolling!
Just another person that enjoys their anger at being victimized. I’ve seen plenty of native americans do it, and I have no respect for it.
I saw one native american guy that disrupted the Pilgrim celebration in Plymouth, and he was nasty and glad to upset people.
Last year I saw an article on how they made a little kid take off an indian feather he made to wear to Plimouth plantation. The poor kid cried, but they had no repentence over it. They said it was insulting. Geez louise, that’s not the way to get my sympathy.
I once wanted to go there, as my ancestors came over on the Mayflower and I have a proud early American settler/Revolutionary history in my family. After that I thought no, I don’t want to deal with it.
By the way, I find the term Native American akin to African American. I’m just as native as any Indian. They are idiotic terms.
It is in pretty poor taste, and it shows off the Russian’s racism.
