Win Points to New GOP Strategy
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 01-21-10 | GREG HITT

Republican Scott Brown portrayed himself as independent of the national party. But his successful bid for a U.S. Senate seat received big support from the GOP leadership in Washington and from the political machinery of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

For Republicans, the Massachusetts win points to a strategy that could help the party bridge the split between grass-roots activists and the national establishment.

Mr. Brown effectively ran against Washington and repeatedly vowed to be an "independent" thinker if sent to Capitol Hill. The message appealed to disenchanted voters, especially independents. At the same time, without fanfare, the Republican National Committee mounted a major get-out-the-vote operation in the state, with a price tag of some $400,000. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the campaign arm of Senate Republicans, sent an additional $500,000 to the state to support efforts to turn out voters, said senior Republican Party officials.

Among other things, the RNC shipped telephones and computer equipment to the state, helping equip field offices set up to reach out to voters. And it deployed more than 25 staffers and hundreds of volunteers.

"This is a model for campaigns in the future," RNC Chairman Michael Steele said in a memo to RNC members. The party worked "very diligently behind the scenes" and deliberately tried to stay out of view, he said.

RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said the national party simply "helped Scott Brown with resources to finish an already strong campaign."

Mr. Brown's upstart win could also be a boost for Mr. Romney's chances in 2012, if he decides to run for president again.

He won in spite of the GOP. It was thanks to the Tea Patriots who were the boots on the ground and manning the phones. Also the obama appearance helped.

Pray for America and the Tea Parties

That's for sure. The RNC was no where to be found at the beginning....once the polls shifted, they were there trying to share in the glory. This was grass roots and largely publicized on WTKK with great talk show hosts from Michael Graham, to Jay Severin to Michele McPhee. Time for Steele to go.

Strategy......stand up for veterans, stand up for seniors on Medicare, stand up for taxpayers, stand up for having terrorists tried in military tribunals rather than criminal court.

Yeah, some strategery.

This article is simply to minimize his stands on issues and tie him to Romney, etc.

Face it folks, regardless of who we elect and how conservative they sound and act before election, unless we are prepared to look over their shoulders every minute and Make them keep their promises, they will move to the left after election.

Conservatives have always made the same mistake, they resolve a problem and then go back to work and their family assuming that the problem will stay resolved. This has always given the left time to regroup and attack again. We should use that time to pick off every ‘progressive’ that finds their way into government.

Conservatives need to become professors.
Conservatives need to become journalists
Conservatives need to work for government
Conservatives need to work and work and work or we will soon find ourselves back in the same position we were before we started.

They still don’t understand what’s going on in the country, bray. They are trying to figure it out by talking to each other.

The best way to completely screw the independant/tea party movement is to allow a$$wipes like Romney, McCain et al
adopt it in their name. The old GOP is gutless and they wave in the wind just like any intrenched politicians. Philosophically nieve and intellectually vacuuous.

You just nailed it exactly. Politicians (public servants) are clueless as to what is going on right now in America.

Would hope the new strategy includes being honest, financially responsible by balancing the budget, that the health and well being of the Nation is first and politics a distant second, follows the Constitution, understands that government is a parasite feeding off the private sector, that it does not create jobs or businesses, will do all it can to eliminate any rules, regulations and laws that prevent or hinder the private sector from doing it’s job effectively and efficiently and have a mindset that rewards success and penalizes failure.

Right, he's a "Scott Brown Republican". Which means he's no cosnervative. As Brown has stated, he's going to WashDC to turn national ObamaCare into national RomneyCare. Some agenda. In the end, it might be called BrownCare.

So, the way for GOP candidates to win is to pretend they don’t belong to the GOP. Then after their election, they’ll reverse themselves and fall in line with the GOP, betraying all the tea party activists and conservatives who voted them into office. Yeah, that oughtta work - until the next election.

Amen brother.
Until real conservatives are on the “inside”, the danger of progressive/liberal/socialist remains real.

To quote Mitt Romney and his political goal for the national GOP since becoming a Republican again in 1993, after changing his registration in the 1980s in protest against President Reagan.

Mitt Romney: "I'm not a partisan politician. My hope is that, after this election, it will be the moderates of both parties who will control the Senate, not the Jesse Helmses."

This is nonsense. The RNC did contribute some to the effort, but not until Brown was already over the top. They had nothing to do with supporting him earlier. They wrote him off.

Mitt Romney may have given some backstage support. After all, it was his state. But he was obviously told to keep away from Mass. during the campaign, which he did.

What this writer describes is more like what happened in the case of Dede Scozzafava, who was chosen by the local political hacks, but then was backed full bore by the national party, to the tune of a million dollars, with attacks on the Conservative candidate to boot.

The difference is in the candidate. And it’s noticeable that they were a lot more enthused by Dede than by Scott.

The Democrat Party does not have a “get out the vote” mechanism in place in MA. They’ve never had to. By the time they realized they would need it, it was too late to get it going.

They won’t make that mistake in MA again and likely not in any predictably blue state, inc. NY and CA. They’ll be ready for a close race next time.

Really the formula is simple; get government the hell out fo our lives and quit spending money we don’t have! And while you are at it, lower taxes ... on 3 ready break
