PALM SPRINGS - Unemployed construction workers may be able to get some new jobs fixing windmills and solar panels. College of the Desert opened their new energy training center Wednesday morning.
This lonely building near Gene Autry south of Interstate 10 is the future of the Desert's energy industry. Somebody has to train the workers who will fix the increasing numbers of windmills and solar panels here. The College of the Desert is stepping in, opening new classrooms paid by federal stimulus dollars.
Larry McLaughlin with College of the Desert says, "East of us in Riverside County, there's going to be large scale solar energy firms that will be constructed. When these projects get underway, I think they're going to be hiring people in significant numbers."
Many Coachella Valley construction jobs disappeared during the recession. The local electricians union is no exception.
Chuck McDaniel with IBEW Local 440 adds, "Construction jobs have been bad everywhere. We're no different. We have a lot of people out of work. We're hoping it picks up soon."
An entry level job fixing windmill turbine pays $12 to $18 an hour, benefits included.
Brad Adams with Whitewater Maintenance Corporation adds, "Specifically, we're looking for people who have technical and mechanical, electrical backgrounds. People who have experience in the trades, maybe with automotive. Troubleshooting is a huge key in wind turbines."
People wanting to get jobs repairing windmills have an unusual final test. They have to pass the "tower climb," not for those afraid of heights.
Vincent Battaglia is hiring people to work at Renova solar energy in Palm Desert, "When you're looking at a plumber, a plumber understands water. They understand the old way of working with water. We're teaching them how to work using solar energy to heat the water: solar-thermal. People who work on roofs, they're the best for helping us install solar photo-voltaic systems."
To enroll in the College of the Desert's "Renewable Energy Training Program" or the "Wind Turbine Technician Training Program," call program director Larry McLaughlin's office at 760-773-2595.
They now have a 'forced sector', green jobs. It's the only sector Democrats will allow. All other job sectors to be cancelled ASAP
Obama wants a depression so his government can become legion in the world. he wants to the pres of the world..
Well if they’re going to be building all those green businesses, why are there unemployed construction workers?
Wind power is one of the more expensive forms of energy, solar is the most expensive of all.

Just how often are there repair issues with wind turbines and solar panels?
How ironic.
$870 billion Stimulus bill and there are unemployed construction workers?
That money has disappeared with no stimulus effect. February 17, 2009, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 111th United States CONgress
I sometimes think the radical Greens are prepping us for a return to the Stone Age.

Reagan’s rising tide lifted all boats but the selective ‘Rat ideology only floats the rubber duckies higher in their own bathtubs. Economic MORONS— no wonder why he have no new real jobs!
Minnesota’s sick and poor, hospitals, brace for end of GAMC

“I’m worried for a lot of people out there that need psych meds and stuff,” said Chuck Hinshaw, an unemployed construction worker who attended a large rally outside Hennepin County Medical Center last fall.
He said he had been using GAMC while he looked for work, which has been a particularly tough search in the last year.
“I’ve put out over 1400 resumes since the since the first of (2009) and had three interviews,” he said.
And of course 100% of construction workers are college material ;-)
What a crock of shiite.
“PALM SPRINGS - Unemployed construction workers may be able to get some new jobs fixing windmills and solar panels.”
What horseshit.
Government windmill factories next.
Ywa, I just imagine that California built all those windmills out in the desert and doesn’t have anyone to provide maintenance on them.
Windmills and solar panels are little more than boondoggles and these jobs will soon be gone.
Everywhere else in the area is served by existing gas and electric...a few people still have oil...
If we want windmill electric, we have to pay extra each month. Why would I want to pay 25% more for the same product??
And to have enough jobs to employ all those construction works repairing windmills and solar panels, we're going to have to make a whole lot of really crappy windmills and solar panels - on purpose.
“Unemployed Construction Workers Trained” for temporary ‘Green Jobs’ which do not exist, and even when they do those jobs will be far and few between.
‘Green Jobs’ cost $1,000,000 per job - at least in Spain - here in the US expect that number to be much higher., since the jobs will turn out to be union jobs...
The poor guys have been hoodwinked - the Dems did this to commercial salmon fishermen when Clinton was in office. Result was a bonanza for real estaters when the guy had to move and sell his home for pennies on the dollar - but had to leave the wife and kiddies behind making more work for divorce lawyers...
Now Obama says we have “jobs” and then we have “green jobs”.
“jobs” = BAD
“green jobs” = GOOD
Literally they are talking about spending your tax dollars training people to work on windmills. This is insanity. I defy anyone to find an ad seeking a qualified windmill repairman. These jobs do not exist.
