[Retired General] Honore says [Louisiana] should take Haitians
The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune ^ | January 20, 2010 | Jonathan Tilove

Posted on 01/20/2010 6:21:39 AM PST by Ebenezer

WASHINGTON -- Retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honore said Tuesday that a mass evacuation of the most vulnerable Haitians from their shattered island is in order, and that Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states ought to be among the first to offer refuge.

"People have taken us more than once. We should stand up more than anybody else and say, 'we'll take 500, we'll take a thousand.' I'm not hearing that from anybody in Louisiana and last year we evacuated our vulnerable population twice," said Honore, who commanded Joint Task Force Katrina.

Honore, who lives in Baton Rouge, is now a contributor to CNN, where he has been commenting, with a critical eye, on the United States' response to the earthquake that struck Haiti last Tuesday with devastating results.

At the same time, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., chairwoman of the Senate Disaster Recovery Subcommittee and co-chair of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption, has written Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking that the 20,000 children living in 187 orphanages in Haiti before the disaster be given a high priority in U.S evacuation and relief efforts. Landrieu also urged Clinton to exercise broad discretion in issuing temporary visas for orphan children who have connections with American families.

He must be under a “general” anesthetic to think that way.

Yeah, right. Let’s move them from one dysfunctional, earth-quake prone hell hole to a location subject to catastrophic hurricanes!

Hate to see General Honore reach his “stuck on stupid” point, but it seems he has. With 10% official unemployment and 17% actual unemployment, the last thing we need is more people coming into the US.

Put Haitians to work cleaning up and rebuilding their own nation.

Just because some people in Louisiana speak French (kind of) doesn’t mean Haiti immigrants are going to fit in without some strife.

A dissenting voice here

Sounds good on the surface, but it’s really a new import industry “orphans” (Oh really, all of them documented as such?)

Madonna will take 2, Angelina will take a couple, the latest Hollywood accessory will become a Haitian orphan- my prediction. What next, adoption fairs?

We do not seize orphans and we do not institutionalize orphans in America, and we do not have enough screened foster families for our own miserable neglected kids.

The Haitians need to be kept in Haiti, their needs could be met there, much more cheaply than here. Step up, Oprah, Madonna, and others with experience doing so.

People have taken us more than once.

Honore is part Cajun, and might be referring to the fact that Cajuns were more or less moved out of France and then out of Canada before many settled in Louisiana.

"What FOREIGN country did that, dickweed?"

Honore is a Louisiana native and was speaking about surrounding states taking in Louisiana refugees. Certainly I don't agree with him regarding the wholesale opening of the floodgates, but his words were directed to residents of Louisiana.

Texas took it’s share when they received all those people from New Orleans. Most of them on welfare. I wish Louisiana would take them back.

One local talk-radio show in the New Orleans area is asking the right questions about how those people would take care of themselves. Jobs? Housing? Health care? Education/training?

It’s easy for Honore to pontificate the way he does. He chose a career that has taken good care of him.

Dammit! I live in Houston - Puleeze, no more “evacuees”. We still haven’t recovered from our wonderful Katrina guests.

Put them at his house and they can live off his pension. Haitians plus other illegals are bankrupting Florida. The unemployment fund is broke and they are rasing the tax from $8 an employee per month to over $100 a month. Employers are leaving in droves.

Obama is going to turn FL into CA or Michigan or worse. No businesses left - well they will tax retirees. All these idiots, including some people here, who want more illegals aliens - can we send em to your town and take your social security or money to pay for them. They will probably need lifetime support too.

Senegal did offer to take the Haitians. I vote to send em to Hawaii cause it will always be a Democrat state.

The general needs to stick to what he knows.

I’ll pass on importing ever more tens of thousands of uneducated, welfare-dependent third-worlders.

Thanks but no thanks, general.

If you have to go back to about 1760 to find a precedent, then I have to say that the statute of limitations has expired.

Can I expect to see a credit on my 2010 1040 for housing Haiti refugees?
