NM Restaurant Association opposes concealed gun bill
newmexicoindependent.com ^ | 15 January, 2010 | Gwyneth Doland

As it did last year when a similar bill was introduced, the New Mexico Restaurant Association has expressed its opposition to allowing concealed guns in restaurants that serve beer and wine. As Executive Director Carol Wight wrote today in The Independent Forum:

“What if a customer comes into a restaurant with a bulge at their waistline… How do we know it’s not a gun? How do we know they have a license? Do we ask? If they don’t have a license doesn’t that put the server in a VERY awkward position? If they do have a license, are we required to check it? We have been told that the concealed carry permit does not allow a person to drink on premise. How do we enforce that law? Do we need yet more server training to enforce the gun laws in New Mexico?”

If the server can tell you are wearing a concealed weapon, then it isn’t very concealed is it?

You put up a sign saying that guns are not allowed on your property.

And lose some business.

"What if a customer comes into a restaurant with a bulge at their[sic] waistline"

Just assume "they're" happy to see you.

If it is, you should feel glad that there's at least ONE person in the restaurant who will probably defend you against an armed robber.

(By the way, armed robbers usually come in the restaurant with their guns drawn, not in their waistbands.)

Exactly what business is it of theirs?
Concealed carry isn’t a problem until it is. Bad guys don’t care about the rules. Good guys wouldn’t carry if there weren’t bad guys. Just how hard is this to comprehend. Oh yeah, It’s New Mexico...

Or you could ask them if that’s a gun in their pants or are they just happy to see you.

They are making very poor arguments. The responsibility is on the gun owner, not to drink while armed or not to flash his gun around in public. It’s not the responsibility of the restaurant owner to pat each customer down.

Here's the second one:

Jarhead1982

LOL, The sky is falling, the sky is falling. 1) the number of states is over 40 that allow this 2) the number of wild west shootouts as a result is ZERO 3) people who are licensed to carry concealed arent the issue, and you cant prove otherwise 4) consuming alcohol while in posession is illegal, EVERYWHERE and this new law wouldnt change that.

So either prove through evidence that there would be a problem, which you can not, or quit your unsubstantiated and petulant childlike fearmongering.

If I go into a New Mexico restaraunt, how do I know my server is here legally? How about the cook? Am I going to get the latest incurable tuberculosis from some illegal alien bussing tables?
If I fall in their place, will the illegal alien responsible for the floors be here to sue?

Those are much more important concerns, than whether my concealed weapon stays concealed.

Legal concealed carriers make up the most law abiding group in our nation. This restaurant owner is a lib, offering the standard “menu” of leftist tripe and red herring.

Indeed, let's focus on the blatant law breaking of ILLEGAL aliens and their employers.

Leave the Constitutional Rights of American Citizens alone.

My sentiment exactly. I will not patronize a business advertising themself as a "Gun Free Zone."

Exactly. Such a place appeals to defenseless sheep, armed criminals looking to fleece the sheep, and serial killers looking to slaughter them. Because I am not any of the above, any such place is strictly off my list.

But, like I’ve said for years...

Put up a sign that welcomes permit holders (or armed law-abiding citizens), and see your business expand...
