Ughh! What horror!

However, and unfortunately, its true that all human life is not precious to in the eyes of our leader.

How can a righteous nation be lead by such a moral coward?

I’ll give you that. I was (rather poorly) referring to civilian victims pitching in to help.

Yeah, I think that’s what you call “dogpiling the heartbreak”.

The media is not producing fraudulent stories about violence toward rescuers. The relief agencies would not go into NO until the military “restored the peace”. Even though it turned out it was all a media hoax.

Bears repeating. There were reports of hundreds of murders in the Convention Center and Superdome, even of cannibalism.

Turns out there were a total of 10 deaths in both buildings, one being a probable homicide.

But as you say the rumors prevented a lot of relief from moving forward.

To be fair to the media, they probably believed what they were reporting was true, or at least could be true.

Death toll estimates are usually wildly exaggerated, at least in the US, when there's a big disaster. On 9/11 there was talk of 20,000 being dead.

You know what kills me? That these reporters can report and take photographs of these victims, but, they can’t bring them some water??? What the h$ll is wrong with them? I was just listening to Jonathan Hunt (Fox News) reporting on an orphanage having no food and no water, saying it was easy to get to; easy to bring aid to, and all he’s doing is reporting on it. WHY the he!! can’t HE and his crew bring some water and food to the babies? What is going on???? It’s making me sick.

I’m hoping that behind the scenes, those reporters and their crews are arranging for some kind of assistance. Otherwise, they’re just scum.

I think the comments and utter lack of any compassion from some freepers is even more disturbing.

Well, Katrina showed us that it’s hard to unload supplies and distribute them when you only have one free hand. The other one is already busy holding up your pants so they don’t become hobbles.

I don’t think it’s really a lack of compassion. Many of us remember all too well what the DemocRATS and their “media” did to President Bush after Katrina. Many are all still smarting from that unfair beating we took. IMHO, the response to Katrina would have been EXACTLY the same regardless of whether the DemocRATS or Republicans had been in office at the time.

"Then if the foreigners don't come (with aid)," she said, "it will be up to baby Jesus."

A country utterly without self-reliance. One reads story after story about the survivors and never once do you hear an expectation of help from neighbors or the local or national government. Only foreigners. Only Americans.

This is more of an observation than a criticism. These are not bad people, and they don't deserve this. I've already donated money for them. It's just that this is what decades of dependence have done to them.

That's why I hate socialism.

1577 people died in Louisiana from Katrina, not 300. And no not everyone who died were poor and black.

You don’t think Haiti’s death toll isn’t a little bit due to man? The corrupt government had no infrastructure or building codes. Instead of improving the infrastructure with the gazillions of aid money they have received over the years the corrupt government enriched themselves instead.

1. This didn't happen in the US.

2. How sorry is it that anger and vindictiveness have shaped the response of an otherwise compassionate and thoughtful group?

Its one thing to show hypocrisy regarding the media. Its another thing entirely to use the victims of tragedy like this to make the point.

FR has seen better days. There have been moments where its more like DU than FR.

There's a big difference between 1577, a figure mostly due to stubbornness on the part of people who refused to evacuate, and the 50,000 estimated dead in Haiti. At least the people in Louisiana and Mississippi had more than fair warning and an opportunity to get out.

Of course Haiti is and always has been terribly corrupt. (So has Louisiana, to a lesser degree.) But Haiti is old, and many of the buildings in there were erected long before building codes were conceived. Even the US, building codes are not uniform, and few buildings outside of earthquake-prone areas are built to withstand earthquakes.

I think that if Haiti were more sophisticated and more developed, the toll might have been even higher, as more people would have been in large, heavy buildings rather than the pitiable shanty-towns where so many live. In those shanty-towns, the death toll has been small since the construction materials were so lightweight they could hardly injure someone if they fell. There was an article about that phenomenon today.

Sadly, alot of people have no problem openly bragging, and they they are better than the Haitians in the eyes of God.

Would be humorous if it weren’t so pathetic.
