In Obama's Speeches, One Favorite Phrase: 'Let Me Be Clear'

Obama's favorite phrase The Washington Post's Alec MacGillis explains what President Obama means when he uses the phrase "let me be clear."

By Alec MacGillis and Paul Farhi Sunday, January 17, 2010

Whether President Obama's upcoming State of the Union address focuses on jobs, health care, foreign policy or something else entirely, there is one thing we can count on: Obama will make himself absolutely clear.

All politicians have their verbal tics -- say, John McCain's "my friends" -- but few resort to their crutches as often as Obama relies on his "let me be clear" set-up. He deploys it in formal speeches as well as in impromptu remarks, meaning that the White House speechmakers have keyed in on the boss's security blanket.

"Let me be clear," Obama said when he introduced himself to the country at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. "We have real enemies in the world. These enemies must be found. They must be pursued. And they must be defeated."

Talking about health care in July: "Let me be absolutely clear: Medicare is in place, and as long as I'm here, Medicare will continue to be in place."

And when he got word of his Nobel Peace Prize in October: "Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments."

Kind of like the folks who qualify what they say with: “I swear to God” or “I’m telling the truth” as if they are having to say that because they really aren’t other times.

Clear but not transparent? Kind of like those who continually utter ‘let me honest’; implying of course, that ‘honesty’ is not a habit.

Ironically, It was Richard Nixon who was caricatured for his phrase "Let me make one thing perfectly clear!"

Not surprising, it is the one phrase we dislike the most. He says it like a threat, “you will accept my agenda, period”

It’s part of his mass hypnosis technique, no doubt.

Its annoying and condescending. And most likely another monster lie.

And people make fun of Palin’s public speaking skills, geez.

Yes he does. Does anyone else remember how often President Richard Milhous Nixon used to say,”Let me make one thing perfectly clear”? I think a very powerful anti-Democrat ad could be made just by juxtaposing a video of Nixon saying that and then Obama saying,”Let me be clear”. The message would be unmistakable.

Yes, it was Nixon. And the `Ministry of Truth’ gave him h*** for it. Zero gets a pass. As usual.

His “let me be clear” phrase is all just part of his cheap NLP/hypnosis act. The phrase is an anchor. Its fools many people because his real intent is to manipulate thought processes and be completely unclear.

As the financial system collapsed the next month, he moved to capitalize on the moment: "Let's be clear: What we've seen the last few days is nothing less than the final verdict on an economic philosophy that has completely failed."

Why that phrase wasn't used to obliterate his whole campaign in 2008 remains a mystery. It seems that the McCain (not really a very well oiled) Machine was just in it to get their paychecks. That phrase should've been in multiple commercials on every channel asking " What economic philosophy would Obama prefer America live under/with"? It seems rather telling a year later, more Gov't involvement in every part of our lives.

Obama can eff right off. I really don't care what repetitive authoritarian phrases he uses.
