Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano extended temporary amnesty to Haitians who were illegally inside the U.S. before Tuesday's earthquake, but warned that the Coast Guard would turn back any new refugees fleeing the devastation...
If refugees take to the sea--the normal reaction to turmoil throughout Haiti's recent history--officials in the U.S. and other countries will have to grapple with how to deal with a new wave of immigrants, most of whom will arrive without visas.
Ms. Napolitano warned that no new arrivals would get amnesty and the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities would move quickly to stop new migrants. "People should not leave Haiti with the false belief that they will be entitled to TPS in the United States," she said...
TPS has been offered to victims of natural disasters before... But until Friday, TPS had never been granted to Haitian refugees, despite calls for relief following hurricanes and civil strife, mainly because successive White House administrations have feared it would trigger a stampede of refugees seeking haven in the U.S.
Ms. Napolitano estimated there are 100,000-200,000 Haitians in the U.S. who could benefit from Friday's TPS declaration, which allows illegal immigrants who were in the country before Tuesday to stay and work for 18 months...
"The statute was written to deal with exactly this type of a situation," Ms. Napolitano said of the law extending temporary amnesty. "It's an act of compassion among other things..."
Ms. Napolitano said the decision was made in consultation with the White House and the State Department.
Following the earthquake, Democrats and Republicans from Florida's congressional delegation had joined immigration activists calling for the White House to grant TPS.
"It's a good day!" said Cheryl Little, executive director of Miami-based Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, a Haitian activist group, after Ms. Napolitano's announcement...

Considering the conditions in Haiti currently and the fact that the amnesty is only temporary, I will try to refrain from sarcastic comments about amnesties for illegal emigrant law breakers.
Napolitano ADMITS there are as many as 200,000 illegal alien Haitians in the country. And now they all get to stay. I say cancel the diversity lottery entirely until the temporary protected status of all TPS groups — Haitians, Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Somalis, Sudanese — has been resolved, that is, until they are no longer protected and have to go home. Why is every natural disaster in the world our responsibility?

Very simple solution...tow them back to their mainland and scuttle their boat. Repeat as necessary and be polite about it.
This is quietly going to become an open-door policy for Haitians, who are just about the most ignorant, hysterical and easily manipulated Marxist-leaning people in this hemisphere and will make great Dem voters.
The Dominican Republic, which shares the same island with Haiti, is fighting against letting them in because Dominicans realize that Haitians are nuts and will be nothing but a destabilizing force.
Haitians, who flee from political strife, coups, the recent earthquake, get warned that their stay here is only temporary, yet those crossing illegally from south of the border get to stay with no reprise, and the promise of permanent amnesty?
Regards,
I don’t like it either but dumping them back in the hellhole only makes things worse there.
However, its not like they were all lined up and ready to be deported. This temporary amnesty is nothing but a ruse.
Ive been doing a slow burn as our military is once more put in the role of social worker. This is a military and national security crisis. Chavez and Castro will take action if we dont. Its time to occupy Haiti for national security reasons and get control of the country. Maybe down the road we can do nation building since thats worked so well in other parts of the world s\ but for now, order has to be restored at a minimum of risk to our military and relief workers. Its not going to happen though for fear the US will be accused of gasp imperialism. Weve become a nation of wimps.
Any Haitians who put a foot on US soil illegally or not, will never go home. Period.
We still have Nicaraguans who came here after the 1979 Managua quake. They got extension after extension and then amnesty.
Every Haitian in the USA ever, is here to stay, forever.
The problem is that they will not be “temporary.” We still have people from Nicaragua and El Salvador that are in “temporary” status. They will stay, dig even deeper roots, and eventually change status. Then they will sponsor their relatives thru chain migration.
temporary = permanent

Hey Nappy, when can I expect those TPS reports?
We knew this was coming ;-)
Nappy is so ugly she could mash her face in cookie dough and make gorilla cookies.
LOL!
I think the last “temporary” amnesty, for Honduras and/or El Salvador because of flooding or some such, lasted about 15 years, renewed again and again by ‘Toon and then by Georgie Jr.
If I were a Haitian, I would move heaven and earth for the opportunity to live in nothing more than abject poverty here in the United States.
Nothing short of death would deter me.
I would come here, kiss the ground, thank God for the opportunity to live here illegally and pray to God every day that the United States never turns into the corrupt socialist stinkpot prison that I had the pleasure of escaping.
You need to credit Redd Foxx when you steal his lines. :)
LOL that’s where it came from.
I was looking for some lines from the white cop on sanford and son to use on Harry Reid but found the Fredsults instead.
