It’s because of global warming and voodoo.

The Richter scale is logarithmic. That means that a 7.0 quake is 10 times more powerful than a 6.0 quake and 100 times more powerful than a 5.0 quake.

Karl Rove got the earthquake machine working overtime.
I thought he was supposed to turn that thing in during
the transition?

No, a 7.0 is twice as powerful as a 6.0 which is twice as powerful as a 5.0 etc etc

Richter scale is a log scale. Each number is a factor of 10. When the number goes up the damage goes up 10 times as fast.
2 = 10 x level 1
3 = 100 x level 1
4 = 1000 x level 1
5 = 10000 x level 1
6 = 100000 x level 1
7 = 1000000 x level 1

You’ve seen those too?

Yes, I spent about 9 days in Caracus on a mission in Feb of 2008. Terrible living conditions for many people (comparitively speaking). Nice locals (at least the church members we worked with).

Zero will be on the first aid plane. Haiti, well, he doesn't give a damn about them. Maybe if the Haitians had built a decent golf course...

If you use Google Earth, they have a neat little thing selectable in the sidebar under the Layers tab.

Click the checkbox for Gallery and then four items down is another checkbox for Earthquakes. It is stunning to see all of the quakes that have hit there in the past week. To see the details, click on each orange ball in the Haiti area.

What we need is a “government-control-adjusted” Richter scale. Take what the Richter scale number is. Add one for a welfare state. Add two for a socialist state.

The result will likely give an approximation of the actual death and destruction due to the earthquake. A 5.7 earthquake in Venezuela will likely do as much damage as a 7.7 earthquake here.

IIRC, An increase in magnitude value (Richter value) of 1.0 is equal to an increase in Energy(Damage) of time 10.
