South Florida school districts say they will be ready for the potential influx of Haitian children following this week's earthquake.
The impact on local schools could be significant -- especially if charities move forward with plans to bring thousands of orphaned children to South Florida.
The Miami-Dade school district has already drawn up a specific plan, which includes:
-Establishing three different locations for students needing to attend school. Children will be screened and tested, and given age-appropriate lessons in Haitian Creole. They'll also have access to psychological and support services.
-Readying 320 traditional schools for any new students who may show up for classes.
The school district will also consider creating an off-shore school for children affected by the tragedy. A site could be set up on the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base or possibly in the Dominican Republic, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

Prediction: 100,000 of all ages to Florida alone.
Lessons in Haitian creole. Yes...by all means lets make CERTAIN they are taught a language for which there is absolutely no practical use. Then when creole law and engineering schools open in a few years, they’ll be all set!!
Bad move.
let’s help then but leave them there.
Unless they need big medical,
then send them back immediately after
We need to set up some separate schools. As much as we need to help..we can’t have it be also at the expense of our own kids education.
We also need to completely take over the nation of Haiti. They can’t run the place and the UN has failed also.
Otherwise we will have a million more illegal immigrants.
Why aren’t the French stepping up here? What we don’t need right now is another 100,000 Third World illiterates in Florida.
Cuba is much closer IMHO
Peace of Cake.
South Florida Democrats prepare for new voting bloc.
GITMO Elementary?
I guess the school uniforms will be orange
South Florida needs more Haitians...the crime rate is too low, need to bring it up to get more funding. (sarc)

Obama is already an advocate of greater Haitian immigration, this is all the excuse they need.

He also said there should be greater equity across the board for immigrants as well, pointing out that its much harder for Haitians to immigrate, despite similar circumstances in need as other groups that have been admitted legally.
Last night CBS stated that there are 850,000 Haitians living in the USA now. Im sure every one of them would like to bring in all their relatives. Every time there is a storm in that area, we take in temporary refugees, they never leave.

Two weeks ago, the Bush administration announced it would extend temporary protected status to an estimated 300,000 Honduran, Nicaraguan and Salvadoran nationals who have been allowed to stay for years after natural disasters struck their countries.
It was granted to Hondurans and Nicaraguans after Hurricane Mitch hit in 1998 and to Salvadorans after a series of earthquakes in 2001.
While immigrant advocates argue its unfair to deny Haiti the same benefit afforded those countries, opponents say the fact that the immigrants from those other places are still in the US is proof the system doesnt work.
If Bush had ended the TPS for the Central American countries, then we would be in favour of TPS for Haitians, said Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, which advocates reduced immigration. The reason we dont is that theres no T in TPS.

France doesn’t want another 100,000 illiterates, either
Besides, car torching season is past
I’m all for sending aid, not importing the aftermath. The Dominican Republic is closer.
This is where I draw the line.
Snort. But the saison du pillage (looting season) is only beginning there!
If it is bad for America, Obama will do it.
Lovely.
“Cuba is much closer...”
Good Point! Why isn’t Michael Moore complaining about bringing children to America when superior Cuban health care is right there next door in the Antilles.
build schools down there, and send teachers there to help
