How the U.S. Military Will Help Haiti (10,000 troops by Monday?)
Time ^ | 01/13/10 | Mark Thompson

When an earthquake ravages a country as poor and urbanized as Haiti, it produces the cruelest kind of synergy, as poverty breeds cramped living quarters that are left even more vulnerable by substandard construction work.

FOX NEWS
just reported the Joint Chiefs chairman says we will have 10,000 troops in Haiti by Monday.

SEEMS AS THOUGH HUSSEIN CAN APPROVE A SURGE FAST IF HE WANTS TO DO THAT!

I'm all for helpin' Haiti...don't get me wrong.

What is the national security interest therein, and how the hell is this not a political ploy????

The American people are generous--but is this just more of Hussein playin' the "I care" card with our money?

I am sure they will do an outstanding job in whatever mission they are tasked with. God Bless our troops and pray for their safety.

No, it is not a political ploy.
The United States Military has deployed to every major disaster over the last 15 years, if not longer, just as soon as news of the disaster hits.

Within hours of Tuesday night’s earthquake, we had 2 Coast Guard cutters in Haitian waters to assess damage to port facilities and prepare the way for ships carrying relief supplies and medical support personnel.

U.S. Air Force assets were on the ground yesterday to get the airport at Port-au-Prince ready to receive cargo aircraft.

We did this during Katrina, in Indonesia, you name it. And with no glory. None asked for, none received.

So be it.

So far lots of talk talk talk from Obamao.

In the meantime, foreign search and rescue teams are successfully saving lives of those trapped in the buildings.

Just a drop in the bucket on top of our already hideously surreal debt level.

We can no longer afford to be the world’s cop and nursemaid.

What is the national security interest therein,

All I can say is a borrowed line from the Marines : No worse enemy. No better friends (than our forces).

God's speed, guys.

Then we’ll probably rely on air assets to deliver supplies, or Marine Corps assets.

Remember, the US Marines excel at establishing beachheads. Those skills are equally applicable to combat and disaster relief.

The US does have a long history of relationships with Latin America through such things as the Roosevelt Corollary and later its reversal in the Good Neighbor Policy.

As if we needed another reason to get the hell out of the UN.

This should be a mission of the UN, not of the US military.

All that money the UN gets from predominantly the US and other countries is used for what? Bull$hit!

What happens when one of ours shoots a looter. He’ll be put on trial. Just ask the Navy Seals.

The blue helmets would just watch the looters like they watch palistinians re-arm against Israel.

Sorry, I’m pissed off and ranting.

I just wonder what the ROE will be for those troops.
They're going to be dealing with a rabble who are intent on looting (rightly or wrongly) everything they can find.
The first Haitian who gets shot trying to overpower an American soldier guarding a storage facility is going to cause all hell to be raised!

I am all for it, this is human disaster in our backyard.

But YES!... why it took Obama ten months to decide to surge in Afghan and ten minutes to deploy in Haiti is extremely disturbing.

Different places, different reasons, but Afghanistan and our military are just as important!!!!

When much is given, much is expected. Even in our darkest days, we have so much to give. That’s why God keeps blessing us, because we take what we are given from above, and give to others in need.

Ports are destroyed? No problem. The SeaBees can build a port in nothing flat. Only one runway? No problem. We can turn that airport into a JFK in a week.

Just you watch.

Oh, and Obama? Chickensht Pres has designated Bush and Clinton to take charge. LOL. Blame of any failure will go to them???

I’m as uncomfortable with this bozo running the white house just as much as the next logical voter, but nip picking and criticizing every action he takes is taking the extra step. If we try hard enough we can find something wrong with everything he does, and there is a lot of things wrong with everything he does.

Bottom line, Haitians need help. The US military is taking the lead because we can, because they are called devil dogs and saints all in one sentence. I have always said that the only people who should be receiving the Nobel Peace Prize every single year should be the US Military. There is no other person or organization that has done more for peace, security and the well being of people around the world than the US Military. They do it with pride and joy. They do it to make a REAL difference.

To quote one of our best commanders, don’t be “stuck on stupid”.

We can no longer afford...

Are you familiar with the concept of sunk costs? The pay of soldiers is not dependent on their location, so there is no increased cost there.

The cost of moving troops and equipment is also not an increase - DoD will just shift the cost from Training to Operations.

And besides that, since when is humanitarian aid not a good use of our capital?

10,000 troops? That many to all the other places? In a foreign land? Seems like a lot, but I may be wrong.

Plus Hussein is sending 45,000 Haitians to Florida, for us to clothe, feed, house, and medicate.

No one is better equipped and trained to deal with massive disasters like this than our military- they are master logisticans, search and rescuers and providers of security.

All I can say is thank God for our GI’s going in there now to make order out of chaos.
