Separatists in Puerto Rico condemn "militarized" aid to Haiti
El Vocero de Puerto Rico (Spanish-language article) ^ | January 14, 2010

(English-language translation)

The National Hostosiano Independence Movement (MINH) severely criticized the position taken by Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño to subordinate Puerto Rican aid to the population of Haiti to orders from the United States Army's Southern Command.

"It hurts that Governor Fortuño conditions our aid to the dictates of the Southern Command. The militarization of humanitarian aid to Haiti which United States President Barack Obama promotes is an attempt to have the United States Army save face, something that is worthy of condemnation from our point of view," MINH Co-President Héctor L. Pesquera said.

"Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are there already, offering aid where the people of Haiti need it. And Puerto Rico...waiting for orders from the United States. What is Fortuño waiting for to send rescue crews, doctors, nurses, and humanitarian aid? The victims who are trapped under the rubble need our help now, not next week," Pesquera stressed.

"Fortuño has the power, even under this colonial regime, to mobilize resources from Puerto Rico, volunteers, including the National Guard if warranted, without the need to ask for permission from the Southern Command of the United States Army...Such necessary and urgent humanitarian aid should not be delayed while waiting for military orders. It's appalling and shameful that we are made to be part of a clearly opportunistic agenda from the government of the United States. Puerto Rico should not be an accomplice to such shameless opportunism."

"We call on the citizens to make donations through the Pro Dominican-Haitian Childhood Committee, depositing directly to account [number] 30-00023253 at Doral Bank. These donations will go directly to sister organizations in Haiti," Pesquera assured.

Good point. Pesquera might be offended if I fuss at him in English.

A heard a suggestion that “now that Haiti’s defenses are down”, both Cuba and Venezuela have the opportunity to invade and conquer Haiti.

He-he. Which the US should “deplore”. Not actually *do* anything about, but “deplore” the heck out of it.

Not only “deplore”, but also “closely monitor the situation”.

Fidel and Hugo: Good luck enjoying that conquest!

this would be an invasion by Cuba and Venezuela I wouldn’t mind

As for those Puerto Rican separatists- I suggest air dropping them into PaP to personally manage humanitarian aid delivery without military support

Another object lesson for the man-child Obama; there are those who will condemn America no matter what we do and no matter how many times we apologize.

Stuart Varney this morning on Imus/FoxBusiness discussed the question, “What happens to the money you donate to Haiti?”

Good question. There's no law, no police, no infrastructure, no banking system, and certainly no history of charitable contributions to Haiti being distributed equitably to the needy and not added to the offshore bank accounts of the ruling elites.

Were it not for the American military, the wretched people of Haiti wouldn't get any help at all.

As for Senor Pesquara and MINH, my guess is the he and his organization are signatories on account Nr. 30-00023253 at Doral Bank.

"conquer Haiti"

The worst thing the Haitians ever did was to kick the French out. They clearly cannot run their own country.

As Rush predicted, the left will politicize Haiti relief efforts. Someone has to control aircraft in and out, coordinate movement in the city, etc etc. maybe the vaunted Puerto Rican central command should take over.

Well then, if they deel so strongly, may suggest we send 200,000 Haitians to PR? IT would really healp and I’m sure they would go back home home at some point.

Just like they do here.......
