Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

January 15, 2010
A Second Chance
His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. —Lamentations 3:22-23

A year ago today, 155 people on US Airways Flight 1549 thought they were going to die. During take-off from New York City, their plane struck a flock of geese, disabling both engines. In a powerless glide, the captain maneuvered over the densely populated area, then announced: “Brace for impact.” Less than 90 seconds later, the crippled plane made a water landing in the frigid Hudson River, where boats and ferries quickly arrived to rescue the passengers and crew, all of whom survived. People called it the “miracle on the Hudson” and praised the pilot and crew. One grateful passenger said simply, “We have a second chance in life.”

In times of crisis, we grasp the importance of every hour. During our ordinary routine, however, we often forget that each day is a second chance. “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I hope in Him!’ ” (Lam. 3:22-24).

We can choose to live with thankfulness for God’s mercy and grace, with confidence in His faithful care, and with hope because He is with us forever. Today, God offers us a second chance in life. Let’s make the most of it!

As shadows of night give way to dawn’s light,
God opens the door to a brand-new day;
And with it come mercies from His gracious hand
For giving new mercies is always His way. —D. De Haan

Our God is a God of second chances.

This one's for the troops . . . especially because 15 January is the 111th birthday of one of America's comedy geniuses . . . the late, great Goodman Ace.

Easy Aces: Jane Listens to a Quiz Show; Jane Prepares for the Quiz Show; Jane Appears on the Quiz Show (Originals: CBS; Syndication: Ziv, 1945)---In a classic sequence, Jane (Ace)---who was reluctant to listen at first---decides she could clean up on the Question Mark radio quiz, amusing (Goodman) Ace and Marge (Mary Hunter), but after she gets Neal (Martin Gabel) to help her prepare she goes on the show . . . and Ace won't be laughing any longer. Additional cast: Unknown. Writer/director: Goodman Ace.

mr. ace and JANE: Quiz Show (CBS, 17 April 1948)---Ace: Unbeknownst to me, as they might say on Monday through Friday on Our Gal Sunday, Jane and Paul went down to the studio to get on our quiz program: That was after neighbour Ken Roberts, who announces for the show, inadvertently dropped a show script---including questions and answers---on the Aces' chair before leaving, leaving shifty Paul to grab it and coax his gullible sister into going on the show, with the answers in advance, and cleaning up in winnings---unaware that Ace's firm sponsors the show, making her ineligible. (Yes, this episode---part of a short-lived, sitcom-style update of the old Easy Aces---was a rewritten condensation of the three-part quiz show sequence from Easy Aces. And it's just as funny.) Himself: Robert Q. Lewis. Paul: Leon Janney. Samuels: Benny Rubin. Himself: Michael Abbott. Announcer: Ken Roberts. Music: Morris Sirkin. Writer/director: Goodman Ace.

mr. ace and JANE: That is No Lady, That is My Wife (CBS, 4 June 1948)---Under pressure from an automobile advertiser who wants them back, (Goodman) Ace has to convince a retired husband-and-wife comedy team to return to radio: they quit because nobody (they claimed) believed a harried husband and his scatterbrained, malapropping wife were believable . . . so all Ace has to do is invite them to dine at his house, with his scatterbrained, malapropping wife, in one of the classic self-parodies of old-time radio. Paul: Leon Janney. Norris: Eric Dressler. Additional cast: Unknown. Announcer: Ken Roberts. Music: Morris Sirkin. Writer/director: Goodman Ace.

Soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen (or would it be more politically correct to say, "airpersons"?), enjoy the easiest aces you'll ever turn up!

Hello Kathy,

Thanks for the call, that you are here on this night...and time to zero in on our Brave and Strong Troops....

Lord God,....There are so many miles between us and those you have called into battle...But time and distance do not limit you...and so we come before you on our brave soldiers behalf..knowing they are in, or going into, places of danger and uncertainies which require a steady hand, good judgement and courage in the face of fear.

You are limitless Lord God in all you can do for these brave men, to meet and give victory in all situations they might encounter... so we ask you provide and enable them in all which they might confront, so that your victory in these battles would be known and heard.

Surround them with a hedge of thorns to protect them from the enemy and to quicken them when they need to be alert. Confuse and confound those who seek to harm them, and let their very steps be marked by you... before and behind.

And Father, give them wisdom beyond their years for all the decisions they might face...as they fight for us all here on the home front..to keep us and their country free and safe. May they each one know they are in the palm of your great and mighty hand as they march against the enemy of Truth and Freedom.

In Jesus name alone, and may all the glory and honor be His now and forever..........Amen

Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning to our
AWESOME
Military, our Allies, and their families.

Thank you, Ma, for preparing the Canteen for today’s activities.
Major KUDOs to 2nd Lt. Sophia Hilaire on the new record. And, WOW! Is she awesome or what?

The DC Metroland weather report

~ Today.....Sun and clouds mixed. High 52F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

~ Tonight....A few clouds. Low 33F. Winds light and variable.

Hum, well, they weren't quite right about overnight temps. It was a chilly 26 when I got in the car.

At least it seems God got tired of my whining and moved the cold back north! Thank you Lord! hehe

Time for me to make my rounds. But, you stay right where you are. Don't touch that dial. Don't change that channel. Put down that remote. Don't leave the room. Keep your eyes on your monitor. Cause...............I'll be bock!

Now remember, the Canteen is ALWAYS

Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.
