White House budget director blames old computers for ineffective government
The Hill ^ | 1/14/2010 | Ian Swanson

Posted on 01/14/2010 1:04:56 PM PST by SeattleBruce

A big reason why the government is inefficient and ineffective is because Washington has outdated technology, with federal workers having better computers at home than in the office.

This startling admission came Thursday from Peter Orszag, who manages the federal bureaucracy for President Barack Obama.

The public is getting a bad return on its tax dollars because government workers are operating with outdated technologies, Orszag said in a statement that kicked off a summit between Obama and dozens of corporate CEOs.

Oh, I see. It's not that government is hopelessly bloated, and pathetically non-accountable. It's that they need faster processors and more memory (and probly some gaming features...) Throw in a WII or two...

I blame inefficient government, on inefficient government. Period. End of story. Get rid of as much of it as possible.

Gotta have the latest computers to write letters in Word and run spreadsheets in Excel, ya know.

This really doesn’t jibe with my experience with Fedgov employees who got new laptops on a reasonable cycle.

That’s because Al Gore’s marching minions stole the Ws from the keyboards back in 2001.

They just want the White House Youtube videos to play better.

Also, these govt. employees are inefficient because their access to Ebay is slower than at home. Grumpy employees lose their auctions and they just can’t get anything done the rest of the day.

For fifteen years, I helped to plan an Air Force organization’s lifecycle for computers. It was interesting....I eventually got to a point where I could buy a $480 CPU that did just about everything that a $1500 computer could do. In fact, the Air Force customers who kept wanting me to buy the major workstations....had no real work that went beyond the $480 system. I had an ample budget to buy a new $480 system every three years and ensure it was always up and operational.

These idiots making this claim of old computers....are liars in my humble opinion. They all think their cheapo $480 system isn’t capable of the job they are doing....and they are all dopey as heck.

I don’t buy this stupid argument at all. Put me in charge and I can buy exactly the gear required for a government worker and save everyone money all the way around.

Those computers are still much faster than the monkeys banging away on them I bet.

I wonder which one has to wait for the other more during the day.

I imagine with the kind of money they spend on computers, I could buy a box that would shit sunshine and piss champagne.

You guys are too harsh. The old processors and 32bit systems that most government employees have simply don’t have sufficient digits to process numbers the size of Obama’s budgets, deficits, and projected debts. Of course they worked for Bush, any computer can keep track of unemployment when it’s under 5%, but when it crosses double digits and you have to add in all sorts of complex calculations associated with “saved” jobs, it’s all infintely more processor intensive.
