It looks like someone in Massachusetts' senate candidate Martha Coakley's own Attorney General's Office is sabotaging her campaign. How else to explain the decision to send out threatening letters to the ladies garden clubs?
These clubs volunteer their time and donate materials to beautify town squares, traffic circles and highway medians.
According to the Boston Herald Coakley sent out threatening letters to at least 100 garden clubs across the state. A spokesperson in Coakley's AG office claimed they were not targeting the garden clubs in any way. In fact they were really trying to "help them."
Don't you love it when the government is trying to "help you." This is exactly what the tea party movement is all about. Here we have the heavy hand of government intruding on the garden club ladies. These ladies donate their time and materials in furtherance of the public good and Martha Coakley and her jack boots are threatening them for failure to file paper work required for charitable organizations.
While I am no expert on these matters, I think it is safe to say that for the garden club ladies this is a labor of love. I am quite confident that the activities of these clubs is all on the up and up. Since their mission is the physical beautifications of their towns, donors can easily see if their donations are being used for their intended purpose, as can the AG's office.
In fact, the garden club ladies are probably giving up tax deductions they are entitled to for their service. It is stories like this that have a way of defining political races. Coakley is already lugging around a pile baggage, the last thing she needs is to have the garden club ladies after her.

Stupid idea, but Martha’s not going to lose many votes for making garden clubs angry.
I am so glad I moved out of MA back in 1977.
Ronald Reagan "The most dangerous words in the English language, I am from the government and I am here to help you."
I don’t know what it’s like in MA.....but in THESE parts....you don’t ‘pi$$ on’ the ‘Garden Club’. It’s the equivalent of ‘Junior League’. Well connected women with $$$. (I know, I’m in one.....just no $$$, hehe!)
More on the garden clubs....Time to put their gloves on and fight back.
Threatening them with what? For what? The article isn’t clear.
I’d offer to sharpen their trowels into bowie knives and their hand rakes into trident spears.
I’d offer to sharpen their trowels into bowie knives and their hand rakes into trident spears.
And Martha Coakley is also FOR rationalizing health care for seniors and FOR tax increases for everybody-strike two and strike three for senior citizens!
“I am from the government and I am here to help you.”
While at college in the garden spot of Newark NJ, and seeing firsthand the beneficient welfare state, I arrived at my own definition of a liberal (60’s leftover, making their way into the establishment in the 70’s):
A person who would stab you in the back, cut you off at the knees, and say “we’re doing this for your own good”.
Gardeners have all the chemicals to build IEPs don’t cha know.....Homegrown terrorist....;~)
In future it’s going to be someone who would smother you with a pillow on your sickbed saying “this is for your own good.”
You mean, the D.H.S report was correct all-along and that Garden Club Ladies are actually Right-Wing “radicals” ?
I love typos! Rationalizing is trying to find a reason for something. It makes for a humorous statement. I think you mean rationing, which is definitely not funny.
Threatening old ladies ping!
Shhhhhhhh We’re using gloves and our sunbonnets as a disguise!
I can understand a garden club being a non profit organization. The sucky part is they need to meet once a year if they are incorporated to form a quorum and do the corporate thing. They probably incorporate to get the protection of the corporate veil to protect members who set a plant on public property that offends some idiot. In the meantime one should be asking Martha how much effort is she pressuring ACORN and the like to comply with tax regulations.
I think both are correct with these people ;^)
