Gingrich Considers Himself GOP Prospect for 2012 Presidential Election
The Patriot Update ^ | January 13, 2010 | Staff

CARY, N.C. -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he considers himself among the top Republican prospects for the 2012 presidential election, adding that he believes there will be plenty of GOP options for voters to consider.

"I think I'm probably on a list of seven or eight possible candidates at this stage," Gingrich said. "We have a lot of people around the country who would like to have somebody who represents a commitment to replace the current failed programs and to develop a set of solutions that are practical and workable."

Gingrich listed several current and former goverors who he thinks might enter the race. They include former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He said he will discuss his possible candidacy with his wife early next year before making a decision about whether to run.

Gingrich also suggested that governors Mitch Daniels from Indiana, Haley Barbour from Mississippi, Rick Perry from Texas and Bobby Jindal from Louisiana, as well as South Dakota Sen. John Thune could run.

The former lawmaker from Georgia talked to reporters before speaking to hundreds of conservatives in North Carolina, a state that went to the Democrats in 2008 for the first time in three decades. Gingrich said the political environment is favoring Republicans and that the party could regain a lot of power in this year's mid-term election.

A key conductor of the GOP's takeover of the U.S. House in 1994, Gingrich encouraged his party to revisit the "Contract for America" brainstorm that helped swing the election that year.

Exactly the wrong job for Newt, RNC Chair.
Michael Steele will not be canned anyway, though some very vocal sectors are beating the drums for it now.
He SHOULD be canned but he won’t be.
Newt would be NO different from Michael Steele, anyway.
Maybe worse, because he knows so much more about how to spell S-E-L-L-O-U-T, and how to spin it.
He has a much more highly “evolved” Master Plan Vision of “The Party”, and hence, would be far more glib about explaining why this decision or that decision was made:
for example , WHY the RNC has, besides mentioning it once or twice, STAYED OUT of the ALL IMPORTANT Coakley/Brown race, and diverted NO funds to Brown! Remember it was Newt who explained the rancid dynamics of what went into the RNC refusal to back Doug Hoffman in NYC23, coming out only tepidly , and only when it was too late..... Do you need an accounting of just WHO gets the RNC funds, which now are about 10% of what they started with this year?

Responding to a bunch of comments on this thread:

No, he is not a credible candidate for president. The GOP would not make that mistake.

No, he would not be a good head of the RNC to replace Michael Steele. He reminds people of the old ethically challenged GOP.

Yes, he will now always be a reminder of sitting on the couch with Ms. Pelosi. We don’t need any of that.

We also don’t need any compromising on “man-made global warming” and Newt’s prescriptions for addressing that and a myriad of issues that he’s gone “progressive” on.

Newt is probably a bit more realistic as a GOP leader than Pat Buccannan. He’s a smart guy, but he let his ego and desire to be loved get in the way of using his considerable brain. And then there’s his personal life...

Newtie, boy, sorry to tell you what you no doubt already know , but THUS FAR there is really only ONE candidate, and that is Sarah Palin. THAT could change, and a good many people who have been waiting in line want it to change, but so far, the people don’t. For better or worse, that’s the picture now, and you might notice SHE’S not saying she’s one of the top candidates, even though the question is put to HER continually. No one to my knowledge put the question to you, you offered the prognosis unilaterally.
