In terms of total deaths given a percentage of a country’s population, I don’t know if we’ve seen anything like this.

As many people that were killed by the tsunamis, still as a percentage of the total population of those areas it wasn’t that much. But this, we are talking potentially wiping out 10-15% or even more of an entire country’s population.

Witchcraft and Voodooism are big cults in Haiti. I notice that many areas in the world that have Voodooism suffer from quakes, hurricanes and tsunamis Maybe it is God chastising His people?

“Samaritan's Purse and World Vision are two organizations who will give relief to those in dire need here, and can be relied upon as truly Christian organizations which send donations to the victims, and not to line the pockets of the “administrators.” Please give to this great need.”

Agreed completely.

Unfortunately Obama commented today:

“Despite the fact that we are experiencing tough times here at home, I would encourage those Americans who want to support the urgent humanitarian efforts to go to whitehouse.gov where you can learn how to contribute.”

The only charity linked on Obama’s site is the Red Cross. This is from the Red Cross site.

“The president of the United States, who is honorary chairman of the Red Cross, appoints eight governors, including the chairman of the board.”

So, if you wish to have your donations partially support Obama’s hand picked “governors” feel free to follow his instructions.

Please let your students know that there are many of us here praying for them and their loved ones.

Samaritan’s Purse is a wonderful charity for those who can help with their dollars.

I do not disagree with your commentary. However, acceptance is a function of faith, not tangible evidence. Perhaps one of the best examples is the Sacrament of the Eucharist which is categorized as a Mystery. It must be accepted on Faith.

I suspect it may be partly due to building standards as well. I understand there is a lot of concrete, but not a lot of rebar, in Haiti.

That was my first thought when I viewed photos of the damage this morning. Reminded me of a trip to Mexico and the lax building standards they have there.

Considering the poverty, and the lack of seismic activity for a couple of centuries, I can understand a lack of interest in safety and the associated costs. Heck, look at cars in the US before the 1970’s. How ‘bout them steel dashboards? ;)

The population of Haiti in 2003 was estimated by the United Nations at 8,326,000, which placed it as number 90 in population among the 193 nations of the world. In that year approximately 4% of the population was over 65 years of age, with another 43% of the population under 15 years of age. There were 97 males for every 100 females in the country in 2003. According to the UN, the annual population growth rate for 2000–2005 is 1.32%, with the projected population for the year 2015 at 9,694,000. Haiti is the most densely populated country in the Western Hemisphere; the population density in 2002 was 254 per sq km (659 per sq mi).

It was estimated by the Population Reference Bureau that 36% of the population lived in urban areas in 2001. The capital city and largest city, Port-au-Prince, had a population of 1,699,000 in that year. Other major cities are Jacmel (216,600) and Les Cayes (214,606). According to the United Nations, the urban population growth rate for 2000–2005 was 3.4%.

The prevalence of AIDS/HIV has had a significant impact on the population of Haiti. The United Nations estimated that 7.7% of adults between the ages of 15–49 were living with HIV/AIDS in 2001.

75% of the population live in rural areas, concentrated on small family plots in the few areas suitable for agriculture. In these areas, the population density is very high, increasing the problems of disease exposure and spread. Although the official language is French, the principal spoken language is Creole, used by about 90% of the people. About 50% of the population is illiterate.

Over 80% of Haiti’s people live in abject poverty. Haiti is one of the most impoverished nations in the Western Hemisphere. The unemployment rate is estimated to be around 60 percent; and the literacy rate is approximately 45 percent. Eighty percent of the population lives in abject poverty and the unemployment rate is estimated to be nearly 90 percent. Half the population of Haiti earns $60 or less per year.
Ninety percent of all HIV and AIDS infections in the Caribbean are in Haiti: over 300,000 infected people have been identified and deaths from HIV/AIDS have left 163,000 children orphaned. Tuberculosis remains a major cause of adult mortality; rates are thought to be the highest in the hemisphere. Cases of TB in Haiti are more than ten times as high as those in other Latin American countries. Haiti’s infant mortality rate is staggering: 74 deaths per 1,000 live births and the maternal mortality rate is approximately 1400 deaths for every 100,000. Only 1 in every 10,000 Haitians has access to a physician.

Most Haitians are Christian but have woven elements of the traditional African religions into their current religious practices. This is the practice of “Voodoo.”

This is what happens when 40% of your country practices VOODOO. Bad Karma.....Prayers for the innocent.

Wow, you are exactly RIGHT!!! It sure explains why God hit New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina, because, you know, there’s a lot of that hoodoo voodoo going on down there, too.

Or MAYBE, he wanted to teach those Liberals a lesson.

A few years ago I taught classes in federal prison and one of the inmates was studying to be an electrician. His village had no electricity and he wanted to go back and install it.

“Americans will not lift a finger to help, no one will send $, Michelle told us “America is a mean country”.”

Obama is a Muzz. Haiti is not a Muzz country.

Nuff said.

Has anyone received any news regarding US efforts to help out? Norfolk is a short cruise away. Any hospital ships in the area?

very sad indeed, but why blame God? So much of Haiti is influenced by Voodoo.

I know! They SO DESERVE to be hit with this Earthquake! They brought it on themselves, messing with chickens and whiskey like they do.

Think the Christian Missionaries REALLY dropped the ball on this one - if they converted MORE Haitians to Christianity, this CERTAINLY would not have happened.

Karma? Oh, you mean that Christian concept of immediate Divine retribution.

Who, in your opinion, is not innocent in this natural disaster?
