Deputy's murder highlights Utah's illegal immigration problem
KSL ^ | 6 January 2010 | Gonzales and Dallof

SALT LAKE CITY -- We're learning even more about the man accused of shooting and killing a Millard County sheriff's deputy Tuesday. In addition to numerous drug convictions, Roberto Roman's background also includes the fact that he was deported from the United States in 1998.

Roman legally entered the United States in 1990, only to be deported eight years later following felony drug convictions. Since then, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says Roman has been arrested twice for illegally re-entering the United States and federally prosecuted once for the same offense.

Still, Roman didn't seem to be hiding. A simple search netted his MySpace page, which had numerous photos of Roman holding guns. His location was listed as Delta, Utah.

"There's no excuse for this. This person never should have been here, and our federal government needs to step up and do their job," Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Wednesday.

SNIP

The former U.S. Attorney for Utah said Wednesday immigration officials do good work, but have limited resources with just the handful of agents in Utah. Brett Tolman said keeping tabs on deported immigrants is tough because they re-enter the country illegally.

SNIP

Tolman said Utah is a prime target for illegal immigrants because they feel there's less of a focus on the issue in the state.

Searched for this and didn't see it posted.

His rap sheet (mostly drug offenses) is at the link as is the video story.

He also was busted in 1997 for "Carrying concealed dangerous weapon". He was a convicted felon.

We'll see if the spineless RINOs in the Utah legislature finally start to get some "focus" on this issue...

Just a cop.
Not the son of a Senator nor the daughter of a Congressman.

Move along.

She was also a mother of two.

Every year bills come before the legislature dealing with this issue. Every year the left screams "racist" and the pols turn tail and avoid the issue. Hope this year is different.

Utah is thought of as a conservative state but, in reality, it has a plethora of very squishy Republicans and many in the State legislature a beholden to the education union.

There is absolutely NOTHING, to me, more important for my government to do than protecting the borders. Period. That should be job number one, even before fighting terrorists in places like Iraq.

And it would sure make it more difficult to get illegal drugs into this country if we sealed the borders.

There aren’t enough real Americans left in Congress to let these children tell their mother’s story on the floor or in committee.

Tolman said Utah is a prime target for illegal immigrants because they feel there's less of a focus on the issue in the state.

That, and our idiot legislators in their infinite "wisdom" decided giving illegals drivers licenses was a good idea. Now we have a lot more illegals. Gee, couldn't have seen THAT coming. Naw, that's not going to increase the illegal population. Surely not.

Somehow I doubt it. Have you heard the new law for getting your driver's license renewed? If you're legal, you have to have documentation out the wazu to get your license renewed. But if you're illegal, all you have to do is tell them you're illegal, and they give you a license.

Here's my question. Somebody walks into a government office and says "I'm a wanted bank robber, and here's proof." You think they don't call the cops? Why aren't we just arresting these people when they show up to get their new DLs?

Did they even mention the name of the deputy in this article? You would think that might be important.

If you're legal, you have to have documentation out the wazu to get your license renewed. But if you're illegal

Actually, that law is great, in a round about way. Let me explain (you seem a bit mistaken on it).

First, I doubt most (if any) legislators thought about this wen they passed it.

Anyway, you are right, to get a Utah driver's license, you must be a citizen or legal immigrant and have proof thereof. The main reason for that was to allow Utah DL's to be viewed as legal ID by the feds under the Real ID act.

Illegal immigrants, henceforth, may only get the "Drivers Privilege card". Legal citizens, legal residents and legal immigrants may NOT get this card (they must get the actual license).

Why is this great? While they still get the drivers card, now ONLY illegal immigrants will posses the card IF issued after January 1, 2010 (everyone else gets the license). That means no profiling: if someone pulls that out at a traffic stop, they are admitting being here illegally. Of course, sanctuary cities (SLC, Provo) won't do squat but, at least, they are easily identifiable for law enforcement/ICE.

Like I said, however, I highly doubt the legislature had thought of that, it is just a side-effect of wanting our ID to comply with Fed rules so don't have to get something separate to board airlines etc.

The article was primarily focused on the illegal immigrant aspect. There are other articles on the murder at the website (see:2 men arrested in connection with deputy's murder) and on FR.

The Deputy was Josie Greathouse Fox and leaves behind two children and a husband.

Oh, I know why they passed it. They were threatened with losing federal funding under Real ID if they didn’t. And I understand that the DL they give illegals isn’t supposed to be able to be used for airline travel and so forth. My issue is, we’re still providing some form of documentation to people who are breaking the law. We should be rounding them up and deporting them instead of devoting time and resources to our current “since they’re here, let’s just make do” policy.

Again, I ask the question. If a bank robber walked up to a cop and said “I’m a bank robber, and here’s the proof,” do you think they wouldn’t take action? So, why aren’t we taking action? That’s my complaint.

I understand you're final complaint. All I'm saying is the law is a step forward because now, when they hand over the privilege card, there is no doubt as to who they are (like the bank robber in your example).

I, too, don't think they should get the driving card either but, I'm happy to see some progress. Now if only the cops would call ICE...

...and if only ICE would do something about it...

Illegal alien deported, arrested and released – kills sheriff’s deputy.

If this criminal was deported and kept out of the country Deputy Fox would still be alive today, happily spending time with her two children.

The alleged shooter has been captured; his criminal past and illegal border-crossing activities well documented. But nobody seems to want to enforce the laws we currently have on the books. Because of that fact alone, Deputy Fox will not be coming home safe to her family.

Noose noted.

When I suggest that ICE’s newly ordered cache of ordnance be used to accost incoming noose-bait before it can become so, I get banned from FR.

Life ain’t easy for a red neck.

There is no federal cooperation. The local RINO’s will be on their own.
