A Massachusetts mother with nine children who had asked a hospital for post-delivery birth control was sterilized instead without her consent, according to a lawsuit against the Springfield hospital and several doctors and nurses.
Tessa Savicki, 35, claimed that doctors at Baystate Medical Center had agreed to insert an intrauterine device, or IUD, that she brought to the operating room, but instead performed a tubal ligation that effectively ended her chances of having more children.
"They've done something. They cannot correct this," she told ABCNews.com. "You think you're safe at the hospital. You're not."
Savicki's attorney, Dr. Max Borten of Waltham, Mass., a licensed obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced for 30 years, said his client was devastated when she found out about the tubal ligation shortly after a December 2006 Cesarean section.
Awake with only spinal anesthesia, Saviciki "realized that when she was still on the table," he said.
Savicki's children range in age from 3 to 21 and she is a grandmother of one with another grandchild on the way. She had her first child, a boy, at age 13 after being raped, she told ABC News.
Getting back on her feet after a rough start -- two of her children are on welfare and she is unemployed -- Savicki said she's working toward her GED.
Her three youngest children are with her fiance, Angel Tirado, who she said was hoping for one more baby. Their youngest, Manuel, was recently diagnosed with autism.
"He was talking about trying for another boy," she said.
She understands that she would not be able to adopt, given her financial situation.

That’s definitively fascist.
Not a straw man. Do you believe that a woman with nine children should be sterilized? Only if she is on welfare? What other steps should be taken, in your opinion, to prevent your having to pay more money to support her children?
Perhaps you should work more diligently for the repeal of welfare laws. Or to repeal the laws that make it ILLEGAL to sterilize a woman without her consent.
This IS a Conservative site. We believe in the Constitution. Do you believe that people who are on welfare lose their civil rights? Do they lose the right to refuse certain medical treatments? Do they lose the right to have more children? Do you believe in Constitutional rights for all - unless they cost you money in taxes?
This is a Conservative site, and we should believe in the rule of Law. If you don’t like the Law, work to get it changed. Don’t advocate criminality instead.
We're looking at that unless we can change things.
Many who claim to be conservative advocate those positions.
It’s incredibly ugly.
Yes and Conservatives seem to want to give her unlimited access to my wallet to fund her program to repopulate the world with parasitical children and future blue staters.
“If you are poor enough, you dont deserve civil or Constitutional rights.
We could bring back the property-ownership clause of the Constitution. No voting rights for people that dont own property and have a job.”
Awww...you keep fighting for the poor. Who wants to bet this poor woman has...a car. A cell phone. Cable television. Name brand snacks in her house. Say...who paid for this poor, poor woman’s operation? Me? Oh, those poor poor.
You heard it here folks...existing at the expense of the public is a “Constitutional or civil right.” Big LOL. I bet Washington himself would have given her some of his land...built her a house out of his materials...sent over food each week...and hey, why not...probably have sent some spending money too. Even Washington himself didn’t expect leeches to be unhappy...if they’re unhappy in their situation, they’ll never change. You have to ensure that they have a positive mental outlook.
As for your second paragraph...sounds good to me. I’m glad you reached down and found your testes, I was starting to worry that some evil body mutilating Doctor had forcibly removed them.
One fun thing is that she will now feel the sting of the tax man with her new found wealth.
Looking at some of these posts leads me to believe we have some closet supporters of the current health care bill. Free care for all at our expense!
well put!
It is their right!
I have the right to pay unlimited taxes! I have the right to feed em while you breed em! I don’t have the right to resent it, however. Freedom is all fun and games till someone has to get a job to support their family.
Funny how all these Constitutional scholars can’t actually name the section of the Constitution that gives one a right to exist at the expense of the public.
Given that something like 50% don’t pay any tax, that’d
actually work better than the current system of “those who do
pay can we simply rape”.
If you want to have children, you need to support, protect,
and educate them.
If you don’t, their starvation isn’t anybody else’s problem.
And I’d not care at all.
Don’t make any unnecessary purchases. Become more self-sufficient. Be more loyal to your peers, and have more kids than the elite! Defeat the population control effort!
I understand your frustration at being forced to subsidize other people’s lifestyles, but you are going in entirely the wrong direction in your reaction. We should be tearing down the welfare state, not the right of people to reproduce as they want to. Take away this woman’s ability to get taxpayer money, not her ability to have children.
We have some closet welfare state supporters too.
“Welfare” is formally termed “Aid to Families with Dependent Children,” because our nation found it more useful to feed and house these children than to let them beg, starve or steal.
You prefer to let them starve rather than to pay to keep them fed or housed. Children whose parents are poor or do not work - for whatever reason - should starve or beg.
Why don’t you think more people agree with your position, if it is in their best interest to do so?
I wonder who paid for her C Section?
