A Massachusetts mother with nine children who had asked a hospital for post-delivery birth control was sterilized instead without her consent, according to a lawsuit against the Springfield hospital and several doctors and nurses.
Tessa Savicki, 35, claimed that doctors at Baystate Medical Center had agreed to insert an intrauterine device, or IUD, that she brought to the operating room, but instead performed a tubal ligation that effectively ended her chances of having more children.
"They've done something. They cannot correct this," she told ABCNews.com. "You think you're safe at the hospital. You're not."
Savicki's attorney, Dr. Max Borten of Waltham, Mass., a licensed obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced for 30 years, said his client was devastated when she found out about the tubal ligation shortly after a December 2006 Cesarean section.
Awake with only spinal anesthesia, Saviciki "realized that when she was still on the table," he said.
Savicki's children range in age from 3 to 21 and she is a grandmother of one with another grandchild on the way. She had her first child, a boy, at age 13 after being raped, she told ABC News.
Getting back on her feet after a rough start -- two of her children are on welfare and she is unemployed -- Savicki said she's working toward her GED.
Her three youngest children are with her fiance, Angel Tirado, who she said was hoping for one more baby. Their youngest, Manuel, was recently diagnosed with autism.
"He was talking about trying for another boy," she said.
She understands that she would not be able to adopt, given her financial situation.

What if this was a mother of nine, who was NOT on welfare? What would your reaction be to the same story?
“What if this was a mother of nine, who was NOT on welfare? What would your reaction be to the same story?”
My reaction to involuntary sterilization is the same no matter who it is. WTF is this, NAZI GERMANY?
Getting sterilized without permission is horrible. I don’t condone that all. If someone wants nine kids and can afford them, more power to them. The fact that this mom has nine kids and is on welfare, some of her kids are on welfare with kids of their own. These are the parts of the story that I find so disturbing.
Given those circumstances, what would the Obamacare board have done differently? Maybe ordered it a few kids sooner?
Yeah, who is anyone to judge what she does just because she and her children exist solely on the gov teat, ie, my tax money.
Reproductive freedom for ever! Judge not those who suck you dry lest you be judged by the sponges yourself! And then they’ll stop appreciating all you do for them...and we’ll see how you anti-mom bigots will like it when the deadbeats stop contributing to society...er oh wait...
Do I need the /sarc?
This woman doesn't need more children but the hospital, either intentionally or accidently, sterilized her. That's a lawsuit no matter what.
I suspect there is more to the story than what is disclosed here. Just a hunch.
This was no accident. They felt the same way about the sponge as you do, plus being products of the Marxist/Darwinist education system, harbor a strong hatred of children and unhindered human reproduction.
You didn’t answer my question. (And no, that’s not a comment that needs a /sarc tag.)
What if this woman had nine kids and wasn’t on welfare?
This mother is clearly dysfunctional and irresponsible. She wants another kid with her fiance?
But the solution is not to give her an unauthorized sterilization. That is a very Nazi thing to do. The solution is to straighten out our broken welfare system, which encourages single women to have affairs and kids with the assurance that the taxpayes will pick up the tab. It’s not fair to the taxpayers, and it’s not fair to the kids. And it leads to irresponsible behavior just like this.
But involuntary sterilization? No.
Anyone who is subsidized by the taxpayers needs to be temporary sterilized until that individual is able to financially provide for themselves and a child.
I have one question:
Why isn’t this implemented on Ca??
I might take one of my “wise latina” cousin to this hospital :O
j/k
“This was no accident. They felt the same way about the sponge as you do, plus being products of the Marxist/Darwinist education system, harbor a strong hatred of children and unhindered human reproduction.”
Marxists hate sponges on society?
Are you sure you’re familiar with the tenets of Marxism? lol
I like your idea of “unhindered” human reproduction. I’ll agree to go along with your idea if you go along with mine. “Unhindered” human aquisition. Basically, I’m going to steal whatever I want from you...and if you try to stop me from taking what you own, you’re a bigot. I HAVE A RIGHT TO EXIST AT YOUR EXPENSE! WHO ARE YOU TO LIMIT ME!
God. Seriously. God, please come back. The inmates are running the asylum.
I, too, believe there is more to this story. The whole part where she says she carried her own IUD into the operating room is just strange.
It is a uterus not a clown car.
The most amazing aspect to this story is that the word "mother" is used in the title instead of the childish word "mom."
It could be even easier. We could stop feeding them and their broods and they could just get so hungry that they...got a job...asked family for help...or God forbid...put a limit on their human right to “unhindered” human reproduction until they were of the means to support themselves and their little gifts to society.
Whatever method prevents money being extorted from me and given to freeloaders is fine by me.
equating this to involuntary steralization is incorrect. It was a royal screwup but from the article it was not done on purpose.
She is however soaking up huge amounts of tax dollars which is a fact. I’m tired of payin for other peoples kids.
